Re: Boat on beach St. Augustine

Everyone keeps referring to the St. Augustine inlet. Follow the link, this boat is nowhere near the inlet.

Re: Boat on beach St. Augustine

Hmm - in times gone by, St. Augustine was one of "those" inlets - shifting sand bars, buoys moving every week, etc. - BUT - It seems to have been dredged, and its easy-peasy nowadays.

We went in & out in February and April this year, and never saw anything less than about 13'-14' MLLW. The shallowest spot was just South of where the entrance splits, but thats on the chart quite nicely depicted. When we came in in April, we were maybe 15 minutes after MLLW, and there were no scary parts (48' sailboat, 6' draft) I might have seen a 12' spot right out by the first buoy (inside the sea buoy).
But - it is an entrance, and if you arrive on a strong ebb with easterly swell, you WILL get a ride! Also, we noted a strong northerly-trending current across the inlet just outside of that first Red buoy at the end of the ebb.
You DO need to follow the channel - side excursions WILL get you into trouble! Both of our charts (Navionics Sonar and AquaMap) depict the channel & buoys quite well.

The south side of the inlet is all in Anastasia State Park. Quote from the article:

The owner said at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, while he was going into the inlet, a wave hit the back of his boat and spun it sideways. The situation continued to go downhill from there.
