It seems the norm for companies to be extremely overextended, maybe Hyundai is?
Read yesterday I believe that the housing lenders are now extremely over extended, they can only cover 19c out of every hundred dollars they lend, at the time of the 0u crash and subsequent rescue they could cover 49c.
I don’t know how the CEO’s sleep at night, I guess it’s cause they know they personally won’t be hurt?

I had noticed on TV a program about another ship that had overturned carrying I think gravel, it ran aground and overturned.
Anyway it’s bottom also looked spotless, now it was in cold water, I assumed that was the reason, but seeing this ships bottom in Brunswick had me wondering how they can be so spotless, seemingly not even a slime layer.
It must be speed of the vessel I guess, nothing else makes sense

Port I believe is supposed to reopen tomorrow.
If that ship is where I think it is, there is room to get by with no real trouble.
Is it about where the yellow triangle is in this picture? Or before that turn? If so I believe they pushed it out of the channel?

Typically car carriers are “tender” vessels with relatively small GM. Or low positive stability.
Car carriers typically have wide open car decks like most Ro Ro vessels eg Ferries.

In the event of a fire. Particularly car deck or machinery space. The use of fixed fire fighting system such as a car deck sprinkler or even fire hoses for boundary cooling. Can put a large amount of water onto the car deck.
A risk or hazard associated with the use of such systems.
If the water can’t get of the deck faster than it is put on the deck.
Free surface effect.
Which can cause a significant virtual loss of stability
The higher the deck the greater the effect, even accommodation decks can be a problem.
Vessels with large open car decks are particularly vulnerable.
So are passenger vessels. Eg the France.

Cargo shifting

Grounding can also cause a loss of stability.

Or a combination of all
What Jack said....

Having spent 20 of my 42 years in the day job on Ro-Ro ships.... the whole Ro-Ro concept is flawed... and an awful lot can go awfully wrong on those ships very quickly.

Quickest way for things to go TU is for a failure to occur in the system that keeps the ship flat... if you want to use sailorising speak you would maybe say 'on an even keel'...

If that system stuffs up... it transfers ballast from one side to 'tother and back again to keep ship flat .... and ballast free flows to 'the low side' it is not a good look....

Normally involves a BG valve failing in the open position... and that can happen on the best run ship... don't ask...

And ... despite what some have said... it is the norm to discharge the upper decks before the lower decks as extreme tenderness is not good. Tender is better than stiff but extreme tenderness not so much.

What caused this? Dunno and not interested in speculating...

Ping,
Abtao... scene of the battle...waiting on weather...

Maritime experts engaged in the response have determined that it is not possible to safely right and refloat the vessel in a fully intact condition. Consequently, Unified Command is developing plans to remove all of the M/V Golden Ray’s hull, components, and cargo by disassembling the vessel in place. This remains a complex situation but additional information about the removal plan and the expected timeline will be shared with the public as and when available.
