Re: For all promoting flare guns for self defense

Interesting video. Thanks.

Simplest solution, an unexpected hand full of ultra hot chilli powder in the face. Much more effective at close range.
Works also well with the powder guns used in India for celebrating Holi :-)

Watch out to be upwind in any case :-)

Store it in the kitchen and only put a cup full of it close to the entrance when in dodgy areas.

And don't we all love a super hot chili con carne on a regular base? That's why we have it onboard anyway...

9mm works much better.
I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone serious advocating that a 9mm doesn't work much better than a flare gun for incapacitating a bad guy. Since you can't legally carry that 9mm in lots of places, the flare gun debate isn't "flare gun vs 9mm" it's "flare gun vs whatever other improvised self defense you can legally possess wherever you are". Don't detract from an otherwise great video with a strawman.

Better still, don't buy one in the first place. Thankfully I live in a part of the world were you can't buy flare guns, legally.

Re: For all promoting flare guns for self defense

Concern for the Orion injuring the user prompted us to get a surplus Polish army flare launcher. Words are important, these are not guns. The surplus items are all metal, well made, robust, 26.5 mm. They will launch big flares and the aluminum tubed army flares. A bore reducer fitted for 12 ga X 2-1/2 short shells launches the Orion 12 ga flares. Other available bore reducers are available that can chamber 22, 410, 45 but this would make it a hand gun. Many YouTube videos on this. I prefer to sail where midnight visitors are not a problem.

So what some of you are saying, is that you don't believe this really happened?

Re: For all promoting flare guns for self defense

The flare gun you want is a metal military flaregun. Not easy to find. Not the orange plastic toy. You also need a flare gun insert which you can find here. Mississippiautoarms.com/45-lc-410-shotgun-sub-caliber-device-flare-gun-insert

It came in handy during a boarding attempt by abu sayaff in Philippines. Not a story I’d tell here.

Re: For all promoting flare guns for self defense

This thread starts out talking about guns and somehow meanders over to Capt. Ron.

It doesn't get any better than that, does it?

Anyway, my only comments on the OP's otherwise great video are (1) the deterrent effect of holding what looks like a weapon must be worth something, and (2) a little more discussion about the use of this thing in close quarters like on a boat, not on a range, might have been in order.

Well if you're going to be posting movie references, this is what made everyone believe flares are weapons.

Re: For all promoting flare guns for self defense

I cannot wait to see where this thread goes. I always wondered about these in a flare gun, but would they fit, work?

12 Gauge Exotic Ammo
12 Gauge Less Lethal Ammo

That comment was a reply to someone else who claimed that fired at the face it would be effective. My reference to a 9mm is that if you want something to protect yourself, then a 9mm works where a flare gun does not. Some even propose adapters for pistol or shotgun ammo for use in flare guns. They should put that effort into certifying for the 9mm instead.

On being allowed or not: I only know of Mexico where it isn’t allowed. I come from one of the most strict countries on guns (the Netherlands) and still was allowed to own guns (background checks, permits, yearly reviews sure, but allowed)
