Google translate is excellent. To say something/someone is totally shattered and finished undressing can, surely, not be beaten! In fact, I will remember this for next time when I feel... tired.

I seriously can't stop laughing about this Google translation. Plain hilarious.

Still I feel greatly for the people who lost their dream. Sad.

So could all you who have more experience tell me why is it that every wreck on rocks, run aground or mid ocean abandonment shows a vessel with the sails furled. Some abandoned vessels float around the oceans for years. recently the Irish navy was sent out to sink one.

This case shows a wreck with all the sails furled.

Why is that done? is it out of fear?

I have over time and circumstance saved a few old small sailing dinghy fore sails. wouldn't rigging one on the fore stay in a storm even If it eventually got blown to pieces be better than bare poles.

In order to steer something it has to be moving.
In order to miss rock you have to steer away from them.

Dependence on engine power does not seem to be the answer. storm stirred fuel tanks causes blocked filters and engine shut down

Wouldn’t you furl the sails if you hit the shore. It seems that flogging sails would make trying to get off the rocks all the harder. It is probably the first thing I would do unless the wind was blowing me off the rocks. I have just always figured the pictures were taken after attempts were made to get off have failed so things would be sort of put away. Maybe I was just thinking wrong.

Actually, if Jim is not right, which he might or might not be, furled sails point to a boat, which broke loose from their anchor or mooring and drifted onto the rocks...

"Navegando con el piloto automático, el patrón sufrió un desvanecimiento mientras su mujer dormía.
El barco siguió navegando hasta que chocó contra las rocas.
Los tripulantes vivían en el barco y se han quedado sin casa.
No se ha podido rescatar el barco. ."

Traslating Portuguese (I think) to English:

Navigating with autopilot, the boss sufed a fading of his sleep. The boat followed sailing that crashed against the rocks. The crew lived in the boat and got into the house. The boat could not be rescinded.

"navigating on autopilot, the man (fell asleep/failed to pay attention) while his wife was asleep in bed"
El barco siguió navegando hasta que chocó contra las rocas.
"The boat followed the autopilot navigation until it crashed into the rocks"
Los tripulantes vivían en el barco y se han quedado sin casa.
"The crew lived aboard the boat, and have been left homeless"
No se ha podido rescatar el barco.
"The boat could not be rescued" or "The boat could not be saved".

with my poor Portuguese, thats the best translation I can do. My guess (and this is complete speculation) is that their autopilot drew too much energy to work without the engine running, so they lowered sails and motored so they could run under autopilot without running out of power. He fell asleep on his night watch, and they hit the rocks under power. Glad they and their dog got out safely, and it's really sad that it happened to them. I hope they were well insured.

Menorca, Spain, yes, it's Castillian spanish. I dont speak enough of portuguese, castillian, or latin spanish to be able to tell the difference most of the time. I'm told, however, that I have a mexican accent.

Re: Lagoon (?) on the rocks near Menorca

The Instagram thread stated the couple were liveaboards and that the skipper fainted while his wife slept.

There was crazy weather the night they crashed (Nov 11). Winds were reported to be 100 kilometres per hour. I don't know what they were doing out during the strongest Tramontana I have heard of.

I keep my boat in Mahón harbour, on the other side of Menorca. That night the wind was so strong it ripped out one of my 20 kg. solar panels and tossed it over 30 metres.
