Re: Marina access in Hurricane

@docwood:

For some of us, the solution is to not be where the hurricanes come to. For others, that type of avoidance is not possible. We have spent a lot of time over the years scoping out places that we might try. Our vessels have always had 7'2" draft (2.2m), so our options for cover are limited by our draft, and also by our swinging circle. When out cruising, you scrutinize the charts, looking for somewhere suitable, then take the dinghy and a sounding line, and go check it out. In general, mangroves offer excellent protection, and you're looking for places with little to no fetch.

No, you wouldn't leave the boat, unless there is a marina and somewhere safe ashore, there will be flying debris that is extremely dangerous, even a coconut can kill you. You strip the boat of windage (sails, weather cloths, etc.) double up your dock lines, using chafe gear where they go around cleats. If the marina's cleats are not through bolted, sometimes you can get permission to add some, of your own supply. Dangers come from storm surge and pilings, and breaking up of docks.

Go back and check Hudson Force's post above for how he survived at anchor for many years in hurricane territory.

Ann

Most of our local shrimpers only carry liability insurance. When you see them heading to the hurricane holes, you need to be asking yourself why you aren't heading there, too!

Re: Marina access in Hurricane

when pangas are being tied in mangroves and half sunk you are too late to move your boat to safety.

Maybe you should get out more, Labeling Americans like you have only proves to me that you are either radically biased or of foreign decent that dislikes America. Labeling Americans like that, is not in the boatsmanship style that I grew up with.
3rd generation American, born here......well traveled. Great-grandparents came from Quebec and Ireland. Neither your opinion, nor mine have anything to do with boatmanship.
