shooting is not necessary..

bear bangers/seal bombs/underwater firecrackers would more than suffice to end playtime.

heck firecrackers plus a net is all you'd need if you wanted to put one of them in your fishbowl. (or relocate the entire pod to the nearest aquarium..for "study")

Orcas appear to have sunk a sailboat- what now?

I sailed in it three weeks ago and I’ll be there again in three months.

The Gov has a duty to protect the orcas. So it’s either deny the orcas or deny the people access the EU habitat directive makes the priorities clear.

Your location suggests Germany , as I’m currently in Lagos I’m a lot closer.

I did spend the the last few months sailing and at anchor along this coast from Gijon all the way to Portimão and I did meet many locals along the way.

I'm still in Algarve, so I doubt that you are more local here than I am.

No need for overregulation.

Man you get about, just the other day you were having your last hurrah on your boat in Greece before it was lifted out the water..

Sailing other people’s boats is not the same as risking your own home and your own family’s lives.

Yes I’m saying you shouldn’t be expected to risk your family lives. So stay away from the orca areas , if you won’t then the countries charged with protecting the orcas will keep
You away

Staying away means you’re not risking your families lives so everyone wins.

Yeah last minute visit to sort out a friends boat in Lagos. Off to Brussels and METS in Amsterdam. Back to Lagos then sailing to the canaries after a quick visit back to Greece.

I do like Lagos though

Have to decide about another transatlantic as well though I’ve had enough I think

I do fancy racing again in the canaries though

I need a rest

Guess that's one of the advantages of being a social marina user as opposed to an antisocial anchor out..

Cherry Bombs, they're water proof, easy to throw, easy to light & if you don't run into whales, can be a lot of fun in their own right.

Avoiding the Orca areas is not feasible for many cruising sailors. For example, any boat entering or leaving the Mediterranean must run the gauntlet unless you can enter via the other side of Africa (the Suez canal) and are prepared to brave the pirates in the Red Sea.

The Mediterranean is a popular cruising and boat building area occupying nearly a million square miles. This is just one of the areas involved.

Way I look at it is, it's just another hazard to add to the list..
Containers..
Rogue unlit navigation buoys...
Logs and trees...
Dumped flotsam..
Ice in higher latitudes..
Fishing boats...
Shipping...
Arrr.. thar be Pirates...
*****.. Thar be the military...
Rogue waves..
Storms and gales..
Many don't ever encounter any but, some do..
Its called Having an Adventure...

:

….and this thread is mostly about how various people think this particular hazard might best be dealt with. For example, I’d have never thought of motoring slowly in reverse as a strategy but it sounds like that might possibly be effective.

While the thought of having your boat attacked and sunk might seem like an adventure as you sit safely at your keyboard, I suspect that if you were ever faced with the reality of losing your means of transport, your home, and possibly your life while having little to no control of the situation, you’d have quite a different perspective of how to accurately describe the encounter.

It’s one “adventure” most boaters would prefer to avoid so I’m hopeful that an effective strategy will emerge which avoids these type of Orca/boater encounters, preferably without either party being hurt.

Having been a liveaboard at various times in my life on various boats with every penny I have tied up in the boat along with my paltry belongings (never owned a property), I am very familiar with the risks involved of living in a much more dangerous environment than 99% of the rest of the Western population.
But it is a choice I accept knowing full well that anything from the list I posted could destroy my boat and very possibily take my life..
I very rarely have full insurance (twice in 14 boats) as usually the most I can afford is liability and on ocassion none.
I've always said, if you cannot walk away from a boat loss with a smile your boats too expensive, if I'm still alive I've a smile.
By the way, my keyboard has often been on a boat, my posting history can confirm my adventures as I am not shy.
Thankfully people are different else it would be a dull and boring world if everyone had the same attitude..

PS: I have had close encounters with Orca and also much larger whales in the Atlantic, S Pacific and Indian Ocean, all very emotional and awesome, and amiable.

I wonder what the reaction of the local boating and charter industry would be if the orca attacks were concentrated on the area around the island of Kefalonia?
