Right you are, Ann. the boat was Charley, a Holland 67, in August of 1983. We were 288 nm north of Kauai when the 10,400# keel fell off. Luckily, she didn't capsize although I would say that she came close numerous times. We (crew of five) powered her back to Waikiki and arrived 49 hours later. Truly a life-changing experience.

World Sailing has put together a spreadsheet of keel losses since Charley on (mostly) race boats to try to find common issues and to encourage designs and inspection of builds so that this doesn't continue to happen. Our issue was that a horizontal SS bar inside the lead which was supposed to connect the ends of the keelbolts was not welded correctly to keep the bolts from either turning or eventually sliding out. We believe that we broke some of the tack welds during the initial or second installation of the keel. The keel bolts were rod stock, not threaded, and did not have "J" ends where the bolts are bent around 180 degrees to prevent them from being pulled out.

Cheers,

Chuck

PS: The keel only had 0.4% antimony instead of 4% antimony as well.

Re: Ran tan II. Lost keel

Famously 2 boats have finished the Vendee Globe race without a keel, being a 3 tonne bulb on a canting mechanism. Mike Golding sailed the last 50 miles to finish 3rd and perhaps more incredibly Jeane Pierre Dick sailed the last 2000 miles to finish this single handed around the world race

Reading the story, from zeehag's link (thanks, zee), apparently at some point, the crew left Ran Tan II, and got into their life raft.

No injuries reported: all in good health.

They will be offloaded in Mazatalan in about 6 days.

When you’re in trouble, you want to come across a fishing boat with a crow’s nest cabin and its own helicopter!
