This is a link to the blog of the fellow cruiser who first spotted this vessel and alerted the USCG. Very enlightening.

Thanks for posting that. Glad I didn't jump on the band wagon of negative comments.

Indeed. Some more humility & respect for our fellow sailors would be refreshing around here. These incidents are almost always rife with imperfect facts, so why the all too frequent jump to negative conclusions? Maybe it's some strange way of people convincing themselves it would never happen to them.

It is interesting to read about finding the boat and the rescue, but it tells us nothing about what happened that led to the need for a rescue in the first place.

Exactly. The rig obviously suffered some serious trauma and perhaps the single-handed sailor too, but we don't know why.

Here is some more information. Kudos to the skipper of Time Bandit, a 64 foot catamaran on a passage from Norfolk VA to Grenada:

Thanks for posting, that’s a great write up and gives us some insight into what the sailor was going through.

I often wonder the psychological burden a solo sailor carries during a passage, especially one who had possibly suffered a knockdown, this man seemed “frozen” - incapable of communicating or attempting self-rescue. Glad he is ok..

Back in the day there was a magazine, "Safety at Sea" , if I recall correctly.

It had a section listing incidents and accidents, suggestions and lessons learned.

The CG writeup is fluff.

I have three different editions of Heavy Weather Sailing on the bookshelf next to me, and I have read them all many times. Very instructive.

Re: Rescue 270 miles off NC

So, after all this learned discussion, we still know nothing about what happened to the boat that lead to the need for rescue. The rescue was well done, and IMO it was justified, mostly due to the condition of the skipper who did not seem to be in full command of his senses.

Knowing nothing of the spares available to him for a jury rig nor of the condition of the engine and the fuel available it is futile to speculate on the chances of self rescue. I do hope that some further info becomes available so that we might all learn from his unfortunate experience.

Re: Rescue 270 miles off NC

My first thought when I saw the picture was a knockdown, and from the account that is what it sounds like. Blown out hatches and all. Who knows what the inside looks like, or what happened to the skipper at that time.

I agree with this, a man who spent a week alone on a disabled boat didn’t acknowledge or show excitement after seeing another vessel - he was in shock and I am not sure if he wants to relive those moments again.
