RNLI

I'm not sure if this post belongs in this section but

200 years have last since the RNLI started ,the crews are all volunteers ,with the exception of the Spurn head station ,whom have ventured out into all weather's and storms to rescue those in peril at sea

The RNLI is funded by donations from the public ,Today it celebrates its 200th birthday ,the number of people it has saved runs into the tens of thousands ,there have also been tragedy amongst the crews such as the penilee lifeboat disaster

A UK/Irish foundation that is non political

Three cheers for the RNLI

I wholeheartedly second this sentiment..
I have friends who have served as volunteers at Poole and Salcombe Stations in the 90's and early 2000's..
Great people who give their time and risk their live 24/7.

Re: RNLI

Here's their donation site. They say that 2024 is their actual bicentennial. I wish I was where I could join.

Indeed!
According to the RNLI, 2024 will mark the RNLI’s 200th birthday.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution [RNLI] was founded on March 4, 1824, by Sir William Hillary, as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, soon afterwards becoming the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, under the patronage of King George IV. On 5 October 1854, the Institution’s name was changed to its current name, and in 1860 it was granted a Royal Charter.

The Penlee lifeboat disaster saw the eight RNLI crewmen, of the “Solomon Browne”, set out to sea on December 19, 1981, in one of the worst storms in living memory, in a bid to save the crew of the cargo ship “Union Star”, which had suffered engine failure, and was being blown on to the rocks at Penlee Point, Cornwall. The act of heroism cost all the RNLI crew their lives.

Re: RNLI

There are also several independent lifeboats ,one is stationed at StAbbs head Scotland ,Mr Tunnoch of Tunnochs biscuits bank rolled that one ,I've met bricklayers as well as fishermen who man these rescue missions

There's a memorial at Wells next the sea to another crew who lost their lives in a mission to save others
