Re: Shark attack St Martin..

my understanding is that sharks urinate thru' their skin.....exactly how this is done and why, I could not say...but I've heard tell from people that know more about this than I do, that right after a shark is caught and brought on the boat, it has to be dispatched and bled in a certain manner in order to wash the pee outa the meat....and it has to be done right there and then...you can't throw it in the cooler to do it later..... I used to work on a comercial shark neting boat. We cut the tip if the tail off, & drop the shark in to the well to bleed out. When finished pulling the nets we gutted the sharks & used a knife which had a spoon shape end of the handle. This was used to scrape out the blood line in the stomach cavity. Then the sharks were stacked in the cool room. Back in the early 70s i was towing the wife behind my boat in this bay looking for scollops. Apears this 11Ft shark was also in the bay, but luckily got tangled in the local fishermans net.

I totally agree. To make a comment basically stating that her death was because she was an ignorant tourist. The arrogance of some members, the air of perfection and being the smartest guy in the room, every room they're in. It's really disheartening, and frustrating because like I've mentioned before, boaters are the most kind, courteous, inclusive, and gentle people on Earth. Sometimes I wonder if some members here actually own a boat, have they ever hung out with other boaters?
I agree that a shark attack could happen to anyone, and where this one occurred..that general area is..as far as I know...not considered dangerous.

This ^^^

Mrs. Flare was just saying that many of the people posting on CF have a very different attitude than the people we meet out on the water.

[QUOTE=Jason Flare;3295993]Seals are devastating the commercial fisheries in New England each eating 10 to 18 pounds of fish per day and are bringing in the sharks to feast.

Yea it's a dam shame....It's much better to let the commercial fishermen devastate the fisheries versus the seals, who by the way were almost made extinct by hunters!

I wonder how many people have eaten shark sold as swordfish. I find both good, on occasion, do to the mercury content. If it hasn't been iced asap it will have the taste of urine

Could be! I've sent "swordfish" back at a restaurant for that reason.
Although there probably is another explanation.

Re: Shark attack St Martin..

We had baby black tip sharks every now and then when I was working at Ke’e lagoon on Kauai. One of our crew would spear them just off the reef there. We would have them a sashimi. Wouldn’t do that with anything but a baby.

The only thing that you can predict about sharks is that they are unpredictable...

If you get attacked by a tigger, you won't see it coming.
