Smaller boat dismasted after hitting bridge in Duluth

Lake Superior's famously fickle weather turned rapidly last weekend, with temperature dropping by 40 degrees and wind shifting towards shore. The wind shift led to a large current entering the bay under the Aerial Lift Bridge. A boat that had left the bay under fair conditions for a race was attempting to return and was dismasted after colliding with the bridge.

The boat does not appear to have an auxiliary engine. The complete absence of traffic on the bridge makes it appear that the bridge was being prepared for a lift but was unable to lift in time to avoid a collision. Though not necessarily related to these events, the long-time operator of the bridge retired about a year ago.
