Oooof.

I look forward to the investigative report.

Leaping to conclusions: Fresh water is tough to get in a raft. https://www.katadyngroup.com/us/en/8013419~p6786

Re: Two bodies recovered on Sable Island

A tragedy - as they wouldn't be dead if an EPIRB or PLB had been activated.

A good reminder why no boat should travel with only a single EPIRB (I assume one was aboard). EPIRBS don't always work or can be forgotten in their bracket in the rush to get to the liferaft.

Instead of an EPIRB, I carry an InReach and four PLBs (one for each person aboard to wear on a lanyard around their neck if abandoning ship).

Re: Two bodies recovered on Sable Island

Strikes me as a very odd story or circumstances. 2 days out of Halifax and they were OK. Then nearly a month later their raft is discovered on Sable Island. One would think they were past Sable and the Gulf Stream would carry a raft further East.

Perhaps they had a difficulty and turned back only to sink????

We will likely never know.

Very sad in any case.

If this is the folks from SV Theros, there may have been a fire aboard, the boat was equipped with an electric propulsion system powered by a “Nissan Leaf “ battery charged by a quite large solar array.

I actually posted about this tragedy a few days ago:
https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...st-287763.html

So many question remain. Like was there anything in the raft with them. They were prolific You Tubers. Did they document what happened or did things go south too fast to grab anything including water and provisions?

Just watched a YT video today that was speculating the same thing. An EV battery (from a Nissan Leaf) installed into the sailing vessel. Was it done professionally or was it a DIY job? The video was speculating about a run-away battery fire that forced the couple into the raft without proper supplies or protection. We already know EV's being transported over the ocean have caught fire enroute more than once. It doesn't seem like a big stretch to think that this is what may have occured in this case.

Fair winds and godspeed to the crew of the Theros. RIP.

I am a proponents of LFP and electric galley and even electric propulsion in some cases. I would never put an NMC or NCA battery on a boat.

When NCA/NMC batteries in a car catch fire even professional firefighters can do nothing but contain the blaze. They don't even try to put it out, it will burn to the ground and then it will go out on its own. So rather than try to futility put out a fire which is producing its own oxygen they just contain it.

That is easier to do with a car fire on the highway than in the middle of the Atlantic. With no mayday and the boat likely 1,000 feet or more down we may never know for sure but I could see an NMC/NCA fire erupting so fast and violently that you barely have enough time to get yourself into a life raft.

Burned to the ground isn't hyperbole this is a model S with NMC battery pack. The best equipped fire departments in the world can't put out this fire they can just keep it from spreading to other vehicles and structures. Now imagine what chance two DIY sailors in the middle of the Atlantic would have with a fire going from nothing to hot enough to melt steel in minutes. The inside of the boat would be like a blast furnace until it melted through the fiberglass and the ocean came pouring in.

Too many people think lithium is lithium right? That is like saying you can drink liquid hydrogen and water. Both are liquids and both have hydrogen right?

Sad to hear about the two sailors. Condolences to their friends and family.
Unfortunately we have no idea what happened.

Idle speculation about batteries doesn’t seam to be very helpful.

Lot of similarities to the idle speculation about batteries causing the fire on the dive boat only to be later disproven.

Re: Two bodies recovered on Sable Island

Here is a video that shows they had a life raft on deck .:
https://youtu.be/oD5AJvu_CRg?si=FKesLd6NPrTaHMot

But, the news reports make it sound that their bodies were found in an inflatable which they also carried. Why would they jump in the inflatable when they had a life raft on deck? Unless things went south very fast.

The video says the also had a Garmin In Reach. Was it found in their raft or did they not have time to grab it?

My experience is Canadian authorities tend to be pretty tight lipped.

I don’t expect them to say much.

Re: Two bodies recovered on Sable Island

I was surprised to find out they were Saltspring Island residents who I have seen around.
Friends of friend's who were quite well known and well liked members of the community. Who will be missed.
Sable Island has a well deserved reputation as place to be avoided by sailing vessels. The North Atlantic an unforgiving environment at the best of times.
Our local paper refers to the 10ft dingy s the vessel’s lifeboat To some extent some details lost in translation. A memorial service will be arranged soon

I am sure thier friends and family would like accurate information about what happened if it ever comes to light.
I am going to refrain from guessing about what happened or commenting on their choice’s until more information is released
