Carolina Beach Info?

Sunspot Baby is about to depart on her Southbound Cruise - with me (Entlie on this Forum), the skipper (Sunspot Baby on this Forum), and the normally stout dog crew, Toby, who has recently had unscheduled surgery and is feeling a bit poorly at the moment. Thus, we are rethinking our anchorages.

We're hoping for some outside hops, but just in case, wondering if anyone has information on anchoring and taking a pet ashore at Carolina Beach. Met a catamaran in the Bahamas a couple of years ago who said there is a small dock at the south end where you can get ashore.

Any advice would be appreciated - Thanks in Advance,

Entlie (and Toby, who is currently wearing a cone on his head and a diaper on his butt, and is no longer available for stud service).

Good anchorage but a few shallow spots that are charted so watch those. There is a dock near the head of the harbor where you can tie your dinghy and go ashore. But be aware that at low tide it is a steep climb up a ladder on the side of the dock.
Problem with shoaling at the inlet and the waterway. Have a look here and scroll down the page a bit;

Southport NC has a free dock in the old basin by the restaurants. It is the head of the only long dock at the back if the small cove that we call the basin. Officially you call cops and tell them you are there but I think no one ever does. Policy is a free 24 hours. It is about 100 yards down the ICW after you leave the Cape Fear River channel and enter the ICW that you turn north (stb) and enter the basin and go to the back. There is only about 5.5' at the dock at low tide but the bottom is soft.

CAROLINA BEACH, NC: 34 02.540 N x 077 53.480 W (ICW, Mile 293.9)

ICW MILE 295, NC - CAROLINA BEACH HARBOR

Sheltered from waves and off the waterway. Enter at daymark #161 and follow local channel marks to an outer anchorage beyond #4 in up to 33 feet of water but watch the unmarked sharp shoaling from 12 feet to 3 feet in middle of harbor near #4. Ask for advice on Channel 16 from locals, who are helpful. A channel extends beyond #7 to the downtown waterfront with fuel and amenities. Very busy area on weekends and holidays, with small powerboats and PWCs everywhere, but a better solution than Dutchman's Creek at Southport.

Carolina Beach Inlet has shoaled to a depth of 2-3 feet MLW. http://www.saw.usace.army.mil/nav/in...beachinlet.pdf
