FL to USVI

Planning on leaving FL for USVI/Grenada in Dec 2008. Any offshore options at this time of year???? Wanted to avoid the island hopping through the Bahamas etc etc. I realize that the option of going outside the Bahamas is a bit late to try but...... Russ

First, I have never made that trip.

Second, of the three people I personally know who did... say they will never do it again and they are what I would call better than average cruisers.

I have a boat in the BVI and have sailed from the Spanish to British islands in the December January time frame twice and even that short hop was uncomfortable at times... not a pleasure sail which was what I prefer and the reason I pre stage my boat where I want to sail when possible.

You probably already know about the book Thorny Path but if not look it up and you will find it interesting and gives specific recommendations on routs you may consider. For me I would think hard about having a delivery captain bring the boat to me. Let him get the hell beat out of him and I'll to the laid back portions. Many feel you really aren't cruising if you chance spilling a drink while sailing....

You will be heading into the Christmas Winds which on the nose may be fun for an hour or so but not for days....

Is the boat in Florida or can you start from further North? Starting from Charleston or further North might give you a better ride as it will get the trades off your nose.
