Statue of Liberty trip Down the Hudson

We're going from Newburgh to NYC on the Hudson. I know what I need as far as food, drink and sleeping supplies. BUT, this is our very first real cruise. Does anyone know a website or have a checklist of some sort to help me understand EVERYTHING neccesary to make this trip safe and fun?

Here's a brief synopsis:

*Know where you are going - have proper charts and know how to use them
*Be aware of the current - it moved right along in that part of the Hudson
*Don't hang around bridges - you'll be boarded
*Plan your stops out (if any) - anchorages and even mooring fields are hard to find there
*Plan you stay at Lady Liberty - Liberty Landing Marina or anchor behind the statue itself
*Make sure you have a life jacket for everyone on board
*Make sure you have up to date flares
*Fire extinguishers
*Waste placard
*Know how to use your holding tank and to do pumpouts
*Know how to dock and anchor
*Know how to correctly tie knots
*Understand that the commercial traffic has right of way
*Top off your diesel

Those are some of the basics.

Because, as Yogi Berra said;
“If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.”

Also remember his his excellent advice that:
“You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there."
