Staying with boat in Oriental, NC

Hi there!

Does anyone know if any of the boatyards in the Oriental NC area allow people to stay on their boats while they work? Ours will initially be dry docked so that we can complete some work that requires it to be on land. Accommodations are ~4000 a month in the area, which I'd rather put into the boat than spend on a room I'd barely be using.

Try Wayfarers Cove in Arapahoe. They used to allow live aboards while on the hard, not sure about now. By far the best hurricane protected haul out in the area.

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried them earlier today and they said no liveaboards on the hard, unfortunately. (Also, to share info for posterity's sake: DIY only allowed on a case-by-case basis.)

Re: Staying with boat in Oriental, NC

It is not surprising that boatyards are reluctant to allow liveaboards while a vessel is in the boatyard.

Going up and down ladders is dangerous and falls and injuries are not unusual. I personally know of several, (Jean Socraties comes to mind). So probably there is an insurance issue.

Even just the continual risk of falling off the deck with it's low lifelines and 10' drop to the yard surface is scary to me and it must be to yard owners.

Then the issue of grey water is also involved.

And the number of these projects which get extended (forever) is high, taking up space in the yard which might be better utilized (for profit) by the boat yard. The area around the boat becomes a workshop, and eventually a junk yard.

If I owned a boat yard I would not be thrilled about a couple (or single person) perpetually living on my property.

Frankly, I'd never try to live on the boat while it is out of the water.

My recommendation to the OP is: Revise you work plan and schedule to reduce your yard stays to the minimum and find short term accommodation. And if you say to the yard owner, "My boat will be in the yard one week, 10 days at the maximum, I'd like to stay aboard at night", they may allow it.

I lived aboard my H37c in Sailcraft, Oriental, my Bene 321 in Salcombe, UK, my Bene 331 in Portimao, Portugal and a Catalac 9m in Almerimar in Spain.
All these places had toilets and shower facilities and 'grey water' was at a minimum just rinsing coffee cups as all my meals were ashore..
Oriental was M&M's, the Diner or the Twin Towers pizza palace, Salcombe I ate at work, Portimao and Almerimar it was cheaper to eat out than shop.
As to falling off.. if you can't stay on board on solid hard standing your a danger to yourself at sea..

Two of us lived aboard at Deatons for a few weeks. Wasn't a problem but that was 2004 unfortunately. Great little town though, loved it there.

So near and yet so far!!!! We bought a bright finished Dick Carter 38ft with Hydraulic lifting keel, built by Souters Yard. It had hit an object near that nuclear power station near the C and D canal in a snow storm. Both the delivery crew died.

The only nuclear power station I can remember was on the opposite side of the Delaware bay from the entrance to the C & D canal, but that was 30+ years ago…
