Re: Planning And Displacement Speeds

I've recommended this book before.

" The Propellor Handbook" authored by Dave Gerr.

It's a very technical book, which goes into great detail about engines, props, apertures, displacement boats, planing boats, and just about anything and everything to do with marine propulsion.

There is even a section in there outlining a DIY way to determine what is best for your particular vessel. This requires several pages of relatively easy calculations.

There is much to consider. Using only engine horsepower does not even come close to determining optimum performance, without also considering a myriad of other things.

It's quite a science, for sure. While there are a number of simple means to determine engine requirements, etc, one needs to read and study this book in depth to get a full understanding of marine propulsion.
