Re: Canadian COVID-19 News

Indeed :-) Consider the source - or more particularly the origins of the source. The Straight, at its inception, was a "counterculture" (read "anti-establishment) tabloid put out by some of the more extreme "socialists" in the Vancouver university firmament. Heavily involved in the university newspaper scene at the time I knew the "straight crowd" well :-)!

"Straight" was partly a teasing allusion to straight (or "square") society, partly a reference - spelling be damned - to the Strait of Georgia, and partly an "in" reference to Haight Ashbury, that wonderful hippie haven. Now that my memory has been tickled, I seem to recall that the original title was "The Georgia Straight", signifying "don't trust anyone over thirty".

The rag's gone "mainstream" since then in an effort to hold on to a readership that now holds septuagenarian, antiquated opinions.

As desodave sez: A quarter of a percent of the population of Vancouver. If even that. I still get a chuckle out of looking at The Straight. And the Strait :-)

The problem here in Canada is we have a PM who continues to BS on the number of vaccine shots available.

No politician willing to shut things down for a while and have the folks to enforce it. Look here in BC, the ferry staff are left to tell folks they cant travel. The RCMP have openly stated they will not enforce as the current legislation does not allow them to question or stop folks. Everyone is off to the funeral of their sixth grandmother.

and worst of all we have the selfish folks who just choose to ignore the no travel advisors - and yes that includes boaters traveling in and out of marinas here in BC.

You must have come from the same celtic background as i did. At about 13 the spoon failed to work after we laughed at the threats.

It's official! We're Number One!!!
(At least, Alberta is).

This site ranks all the provinces and US States. For the first time I'm aware, one of our provinces has made it to the top.

... not good .

Why, I ask myself, haven't I moved — closer to my boat?

That Canada would lag behind the US in covid cases but would catch up. Congratulations!!!!!! And you were able to do it shutting down and closing borders. You should be proud.

You do realize the border was closed by joint agreement between Canada and the USA. And the US had numerous travel bans, closures and shutdowns. No... you probably don't realize that since you don't actually read anything outside your own news silo.

Only an ˆ∂ˆot would not see how vaccine rollout has dramatically lowered the US infection rate. Our rates lag, but will soon catch up. And since we have a lower "vaccine hesitancy" rate than the USA, I predict our Covid-19 rates will soon decline even further than the US.

Should that make you proud?
