As for the border, well let's see what happens in Japan over the next month before we get all optimistic.
Hate to tell you but politics in a minority government is about calling an election on your terms (ie you can win) rather than having it forced on you by a majority opposition on their terms (ie they can win). Nothing to do with necessity imo. Premier Horgan called one in BC last year in a similar situation, got roundly criticized for an "unnecessary " election, and won a big majority. Mind you he was running on his government's record on dealing with Covid ... following Dr Henry's advice closely.
I really do not think that cruise ships returning will influence anything. People with related commercial operations ... Vancouver and Victoria here ... will like it, and many others will dislike having their peace disturbed.
It will be interesting to see how vaccination proof will be established. Especially when Trudeau said recently that provinces could establish their own standards.

Desodave beat me to it, but, yes! Trudeau the Younger would be a bloody fool if he muffed the chance to "do a John Hogan" :-)!

Hogan pulled it off, but there are many examples where early election calls end up hurting the opportunistic party. A backlash by the electorate is about the only way the Liberals can lose right now. The Conservatives just aren't gaining any ground, and neither are the NDP. The Greens have self-immolated and the Bloq remains the ironic pimple it always will be.

But an electorate who has nothing better to focus on could become angered that they have to bother with an election just at the time most of us are being freed from Covid-jail. Summer elections are a no-no at the best of times. I think it's a real gamble to risk one in these not-so-great times.

Re: Canadian COVID-19 News

Nah, Mike - it'll be a win for Canada's Natural Ruling Party whether they win or lose a snap election this summer/fall :-)

Case 1) Trudy pulls it off. Nuff said!

Case 2) Trudy loses. ANY government under a different colour will make such a hash of things, ably abetted by left-over liberal appointees in the civil service, that such a government's life will be brief. Then the Liberals will once more ride into Ottawa triumphantly, say "we told you so!" and be secure for another twenty years :-)!

Having once been fairly close to the people who elected Horgan et al, I used to say: "Orange will have to do for a party colour - but for my taste there is too much yellow in it!" ;-)

Cheers

But a lose-lose for Canada . The best government is a stable minority. Minority governments are forced to listen to the opposition. In a majority situation, the government has almost no checks on its power. It's one of the weaknesses of the Westminster parliamentary system.

Looks like we could have some more boats in our BC anchorages late summer and fall. Premier Horgan is saying the province is ready for the border reopening on August 21. Still wonder what the vaccination requirements/proof for entry will look like.

They way I am reading it is that if they open it in Nov. they are making a commitment to 2022 season rather than dragging it out and making everyone wonder. And since, as you say, there are no ships, it's a safe goodwill move.

Re: Canadian COVID-19 News

Ahr, Montie, there is rather more to it than that :-)

I quote from the government document linked by you: "If you are unable to provide any identification or cannot confirm your current physical address, you can be vouched for by another registered elector in your polling subdivision"

There is NO requirement that either the voucher or the vouchee be sober.

But it works for us, of course, because NO Canaydian would EVER tell a lie in front of an official. Would he :-)?

(Not that this is really news...)
CBC: Canada surpasses U.S. in percentage of population fully vaccinated against COVID-19

Quote:
After lagging behind its neighbour in the early months of its COVID-19 vaccination rollout, Canada has now surpassed the United States in per-capita vaccinations.

According to CBC's vaccine tracker, 48.48 per cent of Canadians are now fully vaccinated, while 69.48 per cent have had at least one shot. The same figures in the U.S. are 48.05 per cent and 55.44 per cent, respectively, according to the CBC tracker.

I think it's both to indicate there will be no Canadian cruise ship industry this year and toallow the companies time to plan for next summer with certainty.

That's because it's all blowing my way . Here in southern Alberta, I'm looking across a small lake, and it is like peering through a thick fog.
