The Delta Variant seems to be not only more much more contagious but also has greater virulence.

Los Angeles Experiencing “Alarming Increase” In Covid Hospitalizations, With 8% Of Everyone Infected Now Requiring Admission

With the bulk of new Covid-19 infections occurring among the unvaccinated, the pace of Los Angeles County residents being hospitalized due to the virus has begun rising at an equivalent rate of new cases, while the rate of people dying is also creeping higher, according to figures released today.
“For the past few weeks I’ve been sharing with you that cases have been increasing at twice or more the rate of hospitalizations,” said Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer. “However, comparing Aug. 4 with July 4, we see cases and hospitalizations rising at similar rates.”

During that time period, infections rose by 387%, while hospitalizations rose by 366%, she said. “This alarming increase in the rise of hospitalizations serves as a stark reminder that this virus causes debilitating and dangerous illness among many who are infected,” Ferrer said.

She said roughly 8% of people who become infected with the virus are now requiring hospitalization, the vast majority of them unvaccinated.

CBC: Alberta extends COVID-19 public health measures, provides back-to-school guidance

Quote:
Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, said...
"We are not going backwards. We are pausing to monitor and assess before taking a next step forward," she said.
Always sad to see a respected official start to sound like a politician. But just glad reality has set in here in wild rose country.

Agreed. In fact, I'd go further and insist all healthcare workers either must be vaccinated, or must stay off work during an outbreak*. This was the standard rule when my partner when she worked at a public health unit in Ontario. And she wasn't even a healthcare worker (in the normal sense).

*Since a pandemic is a global outbreak, this means getting vaccinated, or taking an extended leave of absence.

Won't be long before this is the rule and not some sort of exception.

First announced entrant, relatively painless by the sound of it. Just in time for the first of the wildfire smoke reaching the coast. I'm in Desolation and it's hazy this morning, first day of smoke here. Hopefully bit of rain tomorrow with changing pressure gradient takes it away.

Thanks for the info. Obviously you could clear in Vancouver if they told you to. We are going to Pender Harbour and since so many of the smaller customs offices are closed, wondering if you had and info/plans if they told you to stop for an inspection. Normally we would state Montague as our harbour of choice, but they're closed. It's also possible that I'm making this more complicated than necessary, it wouldn't be the first time.

Really glad you posted this, our plan is to get tested Sunday, leave Monday.

G&M: Trudeau says people who are not fully vaccinated won’t be able to travel on domestic planes or trains

Quote:
People who refuse COVID-19 vaccination will not be permitted to board domestic flights in Canada or travel interprovincially on trains unless they have medical exemptions, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said Wednesday, for the first time ruling out any accommodations for unvaccinated travellers.

I hate to have to say but... good.

I appreciate our freedoms but those freedoms come with responsibilities. Sadly, too many people have decided that they don't care about how their choices can literally kill other people.

Re: Canadian COVID-19 News

Just completed a 'land cruise' from Vancouver to the Arctic Circle in the Yukon. People in the Yukon were really doing well with masks, BC not so much. In some places most people were wearing. A few hundred miles away no one was. Quite strange to see.

Also had to deal with the fires coming south. Highway 1 is closed by a landslide that came after a fire. Highway 5 was closed two days ago but open yesterday with fires on both sides of the road and lots of smoke. They are saying that some of these fires will burn until the fall rains come.
