Viruses limited by COVID-19 restrictions are coming back strong this fall, experts say ~ CBC’s ‘White Coat, Black Art’ by Dr. Brian Goldman & Rachel Sanders

Dr. Zain Chagla, an infectious disease physician and associate professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, said common respiratory viruses such as enterovirus and rhinovirus — which causes the common cold — saw low rates of transmission last winter due to physical distancing and mask wearing. But they began circulating more widely over the summer.

Yes, they made a big announcement yesterday about the "portal" that has been already up and running for months! Really it was just a go here and download announcement while (yet again) Ontario govt reinvents the wheel by coming up with their own "made in Ontario" QR code. We so need a National system! I've already run into colleagues who have travelled to QC where they have a QR system and showing them our "receipts" didn't go over well!

It's definitely one of the weakness of our healthcare systems. We don't have a national healthcare system, we have a sometimes poorly-sewn quilt of 13 provincial and territorial systems.

I've been waiting, and hoping, that once the federal government rolls out their passport for international travel, that it would become the defacto standard. But, of course, we're still waiting for this to happen.

Alberta COVID party sends several people to hospital with virus

Quote:
The gathering was similar to chickenpox parties where children were intentionally exposed to the virus, but University of Alberta virology expert Dr. Lorne Tyrrell says COVID-19 is much deadlier.

“It’s just unbelievable. And it’s very sad and very irresponsible to think you’d get good immunity from the virus without getting serious disease,” he said.

“[COVID-19] carries a mortality rate around two per cent but also we’ve got all the long-COVID people who’ve been infected and have had symptoms for a long period of time.”

Bizarre legal theory making anti-vaccine movement more extreme, experts warn

The anti-vaccine movement in Canada is becoming increasingly radicalized, thanks to a bizarre legal theory [‘Freemen-on-the-land’, an anti-government movement, with links to white supremacist ‘Posse Comitatus’ in US], spreading through its ranks, according to multiple experts.

The pseudo-legal ideas of the Freemen have ebbed and flowed over the years, but the philosophy has typically been relegated to the fringes of society, according to experts. Not anymore. The pandemic and its associated opposition to public health measures have vaulted these ideas into the public eye.

A Canadian COVID-19 study that turned out to be wrong has spread like wildfire among anti-vaxxers

An inaccurate Canadian study [1], suggesting an extremely high rate of heart inflammation after COVID-19 vaccines, has been unanimously retracted*, by the authors, due to a major mathematical error; but not before it spread, like wildfire, on anti-vaccination websites, and social media. The true rate of side effects is closer to 1 in 25,000 — not 1 in 1,000 as reported.

* Retraction https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1....13.21262182v2

These so-called "zombie papers" are often intentionally shared, within anti-vaccination circles, long after they're retracted, or corrected, in order to disingenuously influence public opinion, and fuel misinformation.

How much did they receive for the retraction?

1 in 25000 is still a lot.

The vast majority of such cases recover quickly with no lasting effects.

One of the most common false claims, is that PCR tests are prone to false positives. They are NOT.
These two papers would disagree with you.

From the second link:
...there were 5,079 negative tests; thus a total of 5,110 tests were carried out. The false positive rate (single gene low level positive) in this period was 0.5% (26/5110), giving a specificity of 99.5% (5,079/5,105).
... pretty darn good, I'd say.

The CBC article sez:
One of the most common false claims is that PCR tests are prone to huge numbers of false positives...
This is correct about that being a false claim, no?

But thanks for playing.

Re: Canadian COVID-19 News

Actually, we're just trying to have one space for Canadian Covid news. But the anti brigade keeps showing up to spread their misinformation.
