Re: CANADIAN COVID-19 NEWS

Let us all hope that there will be safe and highly effective vaccines developed and with adequate near term production capacity to avail innoculations for all.

The Canadians government has signed two new agreements for potential COVID-19 vaccines with Novavax and Johnson and Johnson.

This is in addition to previously announced deals with Pfizer and Moderna, which in total will now allow Canada to have access to at least 88 million doses, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced at a press conference on Monday. The vaccines are in Phase 2 and 3 of clinical trials and won’t be fully purchased until they’re approved by Health Canada in safety and efficacy.

“Our government will continue to take the steps needed to make sure Canada gets a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible,” the prime minister said.

The federal government is also investing $126 million to expand the bio-manufacturing facility at the National Research Council (NRC) Royalmount, expected to be operational by mid-2021.

When asked if vaccination will be mandatory in Canada when it becomes available, Trudeau said information on the administration of vaccines will come from expert advice in the future.
He added that some believe only one dosage will be necessary, while others believe more than one would be required for each individual.

The prime minister also said it is unfortunate that the China’s CanSino Biologics COVID-19 vaccine will not be shipped to Canada but the federal government is focused on “many other paths.”

Looks like it's going to get very interesting in British Columbia!! Wonder if it will spread to the other provinces??

Re: CANADIAN COVID-19 NEWS

School opening is going to be a very tense time in BC. Lawsuit aside, many parents are very concerned about their kids and some, like the lawsuit parents, have serious immuno concerns at home. With covid numbers increasing especially in younger age groups, it does not bode well.
I do resent the "petty Canadians" suggestion at wanting to see our laws respected. My look at the AIS tracker today shows 4 US flagged pleasure craft located in my area of the northern Salish Sea. There are also US flagged fish boats and tugs transiting our waters - fine, they're working/transiting and that's in line with the agreement between our countries. I question the 4 pleasure craft that display though - all transiting? Then there is this from the West Coast of the Island;

It just angers Canadians and makes us more intransigent - that's a long way from being "petty".

Re: CANADIAN COVID-19 NEWS

Snapshot of new cases:

Toronto: 50

Buffalo (all of Erie Co.) 53

Rochester area: 8

Kingston: 1

Oswego: 53

Sodus (all of Wayne Co.): 1

Not surprisingly, Buffalo and Oswego numbers are boosted by returning university students. Not sure about Toronto.

But it looks to me that if we walled off Buffalo and Toronto, there's effectively zero risk crossing the border.

Canada reports no new COVID-19 deaths, first time since March

Canada reported no new deaths from COVID-19 on Friday for the first time in six months. The last time the country reported no new deaths from the virus on March 15, at the start of lockdowns in North America due to the pandemic, Reuters reports.

As of Friday evening, over 6 million people had been tested for COVID-19 in Canada, 2.1% of which came back positive. Some 702 new cases were reported on Friday, but no new deaths, the Public Health Agency of Canada reported.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, Quebec reported one new death on September 11, but Ontario removed a previously reported death. That meant the number of deaths reported, 9,163, remained unchanged from the previous day.

Re: CANADIAN COVID-19 NEWS

An update for canadians aboard in the usa right now.
Quick background, in may we were told to wait for Our cruising permit to expire before applying for a new one. Itexpired while our boat was on the hard here in virginia. Once ready to launch(yesterday) we started calling different CBP offices to get a new one set up. Some (oswego ny) told us no cruising permits were being issued to discourage cross border travel
Luckily Norfolk is issuing, but in person only.
With the exception of the 1.5 hour drive each way it went very smooth and easy. So we are good for another year

Ontario rolls back gathering limits in some areas as 293 new COVID-19 cases reported

in a nutshell, it's a reduction in size of permitted gatherings in Toronto, Ottawa and Peel region, because of rise in case numbers.

Some of my friends are expecting further restrictions or changes as we see the numbers from school starting up.

Just expect everyone to be driven to distance learning again. As for me, in this situation the teachers are the hardest, because the children at home behave as they want and it is extremely difficult to conduct lessons.

THUNDER BAY, ON
After more than three weeks without a confirmed reported case, the Thunder Bay District is COVID-19-free no longer.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Thursday announced the area's 104th case since the pandemic began, the first since late August.

The individual is a female in her 20s with no known exposure category.

She is self isolating somewhere in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas.

To date there have been 104 cases, with 102 of them resolved and one death.

Re: CANADIAN COVID-19 NEWS

Border with the US closed until at least October 21st.

Yet there is insertion of confusion. U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said border restrictions between Canada and the United States because of the novel coronavirus pandemic would be lifted "pretty soon", just hours after the two countries confirmed they would remain in place until at least Oct. 21.

"We're looking at the border with Canada. Canada would like it opened and we want to get back to normal business," Trump told reporters in Washington. "We're going to be opening the borders pretty soon."

There was no immediate explanation from the White House for the discrepancy or what Trump meant by "pretty soon."

On Twitter, Canada's Minister for Public Safety Bill Blair confirmed a month-long extension of border restrictions. "We will continue to base our decisions on the best public health advice available to keep Canadians safe."

Damn... we're heading back to The Lakehead in a month or so. Hope things don't go off the rails.

There is little demand and virtually no appetite to open the border from the Canadian perspective. The public does not want it to happen, and the Trudeau government, who is eyeing a potential election, certainly won't do it.
