But Ontario, Quebec, BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan NOW (in past week) have higher rates than most/all US states!

In Ontario and Quebec they have made it mandatory to wear a mask in cemeteries. They say that the virus can travel from dead people underground and infect you . They’re talking about closing the cemeteries altogether.

Maybe we could give Michigan to Canada to care for the next couple of months, y'all send her back home when their pandemic breaks.
And nobody listens to any of it. Travel restrictions between PA and NJ, except for commuters? Really?

The “warning” is meaningless. It discredits the CDC.

Well, to be fair, this is a one-day measure. The standard measure is to use a 7-day rolling average/capita.

According to this dataset comparison, which also uses Johns Hopkins for USA numbers, when looking at the 7-day new case count per-capita, our worst province (Alberta) is currently ranked 11th when comparing states & provinces. Ontario is 15th, Sask. is 19th and BC is 23rd.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/corona...ates-1.5051033

If you rank on sheer number of new case, Ontario comes in 5th, Quebec is 14th, Alberta comes in at 19th and 21st.

This is a dramatic increase in case counts for Canada. In the not-so-distant-past the first province on this list would have been around the 45th. So it's got a lot worse, very fast, up here in the Great White North.

But to hpeer's point, the last nine slots on this state+province/territory list (50+13) shows seven Canadian jurisdictions at the very bottom of the list. The four Atlantic provinces and the three northern territories remain virtually Covid-free

Re: Canadian COVID-19 News

“Canada's COVID-19 case rate now tops U.S. rate.
Here's what the experts say”

Situation in Canada concerning, but experts say context critical when comparing countries.
Factors like testing behaviours in the U.S., and a higher rate of COVID-19 deaths per million in the U.S., are important to consider when assessing the situation.
On April 9, when Canada recorded more cases per million, a graphic from Our World in Data, showed the U.S. had 2.97 daily deaths per million on a seven-day average, compared to 0.85 in Canada.

Wastewater testing suggests that in Ottawa, COVID levels may be plateauing or declining. (it's kind of cool that this sort of monitoring gives useful data)

If the Ottawa results are representative of most of Ontario, then it's going mostly as I'd hoped/expected; the stay-at-home order will lead to decline in infection rate. Hopefully enough to justify some opening up again in May, and Mike will still make it to NB for the summer.

Speaking as a temporary Ottawan right now, this is good news indeed. Still no signs from Newfoundland (NL) about when us come-from-aways might be let back in, but the light is getting brighter at the end of this long tunnel.

Given that the stomach acid kills the virus, I wonder if they have a way to discern generally the difference between no longer contagious cases shedding dead virus from those 'active' cases? I understand the conventional test will not be given to people I know who tested positive because the test will still return positive despite the fact that they are no longer contagious. This is due to the shedding of dead virus by the body as I understand it and it goes on for weeks.

Don’t let ‘em fool ya Mike. That light is just a screaming hot variant entering the tunnel coming at ye.

Oh Lord how I hearn for this to be over. However I feel there are deeper trends (not conspiracy) operating and we are living in a very frightened new world.

You can only be brave if you are frightened.

I suppose that growing light at the end of the tunnel is really just a train speeding towards us .

For those feeling like there is no way to protect yourself, an anecdote. We had 2 cases in my manufacturing plant which we feel were the variants due to how fast the symptoms appeared (3 days or less) and which we feel were community transmission from the fact that they were in a social setting without masks.
Our protocols include mask wearing and restriction to be the only one at a table in the lunchroom and to be more than 6' apart at that time. None of the other staff members who all followed the normal protocols you are using has been sick and all tested negative.
One small sample but it lends some confidence that we are not doomed!

Bad news:
N.S. reinstates self-isolation for travellers from N.B.; Atlantic bubble in jeopardy

Quote:
[Nova Scotia Premier Iain] Rankin also said it's "looking unlikely" that the Atlantic bubble will be reformed on April 19, as expected.

The Atlantic premiers will be meeting on Tuesday or Wednesday to discuss the matter, but Rankin said right now, leaders are leaning toward pushing the date to sometime in May.
