All that's needed is for Boris to grow a spine and act on Article 16 and stop kissing up to Brussels.. you can't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear.
The worst of the overall pandemic economic hit is now behind the UK but the aftershocks remain. Downing Street is unlikely to avoid the opportunity to boast about 2021. During its hosting of the G7, the UK is now confirmed as the fastest growing economy of these major nations.

But that comparison needs a great dollop of context.

The 7.5% growth the UK economy recorded in 2021 is the highest of the G7 major economies and that does indicate a strong bounceback. This should be seen alongside the sharpest fall of 9.4% for the UK compared to those same economies in 2020. On the internationally comparable basis, the economy is still slightly smaller than it was at the end of December 2019, unlike the US, France and Canada. On the slightly more timely basis, using monthly data not available in other countries, the UK economy is larger than it was in February 2020.

The UK economy grew by 1% in the final quarter of 2021, a little lower than expectations, as the spread of the Omicron variant weighed on the economy in December. Last year's growth was the strongest since the Office of National Statistics records began in 1948 and the fastest since 1941, during World War Two, using data collected by the Bank of England. Yet, the slump of 9.4% in 2020 was the biggest drop since 1919 when there was demobilisation after World War One.

The World Health Organization (WHO) epidemiologist and technical lead on COVID-19, Dr Maria Van Kerkhove has said that the pandemic is not over yet
Published: Wednesday, February 9, 2022

. . .

"The next variant of concern will be more fit, and what we mean by that is it will be more transmissible because it will have to overtake what is currently circulating. The big question is whether or not future variants will be more or less severe," WHO epidemiologist and technical lead on Covid-19 Dr Maria Van Kerkhove said.

She further warned against buying into theories that the virus will continue to mutate into milder strains that make people less sick than earlier variants.

"We expect that with interventions, if they are used appropriately, we expect there to be a low level of circulation. But with that low level of circulation, there'll be flare-ups, there will be outbreaks. And those outbreaks will occur in people who are not well protected. Either because they have not been vaccinated because they don't have access, or they refuse to be vaccinated because there is vaccine hesitancy which we are working to address globally," she said while expounding on the importance of getting inoculated against COVID-19.

The current UK economic reality, in one word: COVID. Like most of the world, curiously. And there are jobs now that the EU workers were kicked out. Quel surprise.

Look, whether I agree about Brexit or not, UK is not my home, and I truly wish you well. But please don't blow Boris' second-hand smoke up my arse.
Not blowing smoke.. he started well but since his Covid experience he seems to have lost the plot.. along with his balls.
As for your arse.. I'm not the type of guy you may be used to..

It was you or someone like-minded who posted that vaccinations would prevent pregnant coworkers get infected. That is the context of my comments, read back.

They did promise us that vaccination would stop this pandemic and get rid of all emergency mandates. I’m sure you can Google that

Reducing severe illness and some effect in spread are what I already wrote so how can you put that against me as those are my words! It’s all about detail: reducing severe illness does not mean the virus has stopped spreading or even slow it down. The reduction of chance to becoming infected after three jabs is, like I wrote, very temporary: think weeks. In the scale of things, more people than ever were infected so the virus clearly beat the vaccines and now infections are going down because people get natural immunity which, contrary to vaccines, does work and has proven to be not just very effective, but also provide long term protection.

Vaccines normally work which means that they bring the spread of a disease to a stop, then prevent it. Polio, measles etc. are good examples. For Omicron, drinking tonic water helps as much or more as double vax.

The emergency mandates are starting to be removed. Vaccines have played a big role in that. Future success will depend on what sort of variants crop up next.

That must be some awesome tonic water; care to share the brand? Or perhaps you're just misinformed (again).

You must be a politician to be able to keep ignoring what I write while repeating your irrelevant mantra about a current vaccine preventing severe illness. If you show me a serious report that current vaccines prevented Omicron spread, then you redeem yourself, otherwise you’re just a troll… or politician

p.s. good tonic water has the original, all natural form of quinine that has anti viral properties.

Congratulations UK!
However, in context, that's not so rosy.

Evidently, the UK did have the fastest growth [7.5%] in the G7, last year, however, that came after the UK had the biggest contraction [±10%] of any G7 nation in 2020.
The UK has not yet recovered to it’s pre-pandemic GDP.

Over the course of the pandemic so far (between the fourth quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of 2021), the UK’s economy has experienced the second worst growth among the G7, contracting by 1.5%. By way of comparison, the EU is back to where it was pre-Covid, while the US [for instance] is more than 3% above its level, in late 2019. France & Canada are also up, over 2019.

So, while the UK has "scored more goals, this period - they're STILL LOSING the game."

Protest crowd remains on Ambassador Bridge after police clear out part of blockade
By Saturday afternoon, all of the big rigs had left, many laying on their horns as they departed. The intersection is now clear of vehicles and protesters, though the Ambassador Bridge — typically Canada's busiest border crossing — remains closed. But police eventually stopped pushing the protesters back, and didn't block other access points, which allowed more people to arrive, and join the protesting crowd.

In the Atlantic provinces, a crowd of protesters, outside the New Brunswick Legislature, in Fredericton, grew to nearly 700 on Saturday afternoon, according to the mayor's advisers. A long, honking line of cars winding around the block drew cheers into the evening. As it began getting dark, some protesters started to disperse, leaving about 200 people as of 6 p.m. AT.

A Nova Scotia protest, in support of the convoy, comprised of up to 300 people, was met with a counter-protest in Halifax.

In Prince Edward Island, cars, trucks, and even some tractors travelled through Charlottetown, in what was billed as a "slow roll" protest. The local police chief said 500 to 700 vehicles took part.

In the Prairies, several border crossings were impassable on Saturday. The Manitoba border crossing that connects Emerson to Pembina, N.D., was blocked by a convoy of about 50 trucks and farm vehicles, while demonstrators also gathered at the provincial legislature in Winnipeg.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said services at the Coutts crossing in Alberta have been temporarily suspended, due to similar protests.

In Edmonton, a court injunction, obtained by the city, to address noise from protests against public health restrictions, appeared to have little effect, as trucks and semis rolled past the provincial legislature, for a third-straight Saturday, though some cars were stopped by a dozen counter-protesters, on foot and on bikes. Close to 700 people also marched along Jasper Avenue in downtown Edmonton.

Meanwhile, a convoy of at least a dozen semi-trucks, and dozens of other vehicles, met at a border between Saskatchewan and the U.S. The convoy had trickled through a few RCMP and Saskatchewan highway patrol check stops on its way, parking, in a plot of land near the Regway-Raymond crossing.

In Ontario, where Premier Doug Ford has declared a state of emergency, police moved in Saturday to enforce an injunction to end a days-long blockade at the Ambassador Bridge, linking Windsor to Detroit. Yet a crowd of defiant anti-mandate demonstrators remained on the street leading to the bridge well into the evening.

At the Peace Bridge, near Fort Erie, hundreds of people drove vehicles around town for several hours, honking, after they were diverted from the border crossing. Others continued to the bridge on foot. Roughly 70 people, including children, walked onto Queen Elizabeth Way, as police stood by. Some adults tried to stop transport trucks, and other vehicles, from continuing into Canada. Police kept one lane open for incoming traffic as protesters stood on the highway.

More than 1,000 people gathered peacefully, near the Ontario Legislature, in Toronto.

In Ottawa, police estimated 4,000 protesters were in the nation's capital, on Saturday, and announced a new "integrated command centre" with provincial and federal partners to "enhance the ability to respond to the current situation."

In Quebec, protesters in Montreal marched, and listened to speakers at a park, which included People's Party of Canada Leader, Maxime Bernier. A smaller group of counter-protesters also held a short march, calling the movement against pandemic measures "a front for the far-right."

In British Columbia, the main route to the Pacific Highway border crossing to Washington, in Surrey, B.C., has closed, after being clogged by anti-mandate protesters. While the border remains open, DriveBC camera footage shows protesters walking toward the Pacific Highway crossing after breaking through an RCMP barricade.
