Re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

Canary Islands update August 15:

Most new cases found to be IN THE PORT AREA - this is where Las Palmas Marina is located. This is where you will be, if you decide to come here.

https://www.laprovincia.es/sociedad/...o/1308831.html

We have had 20x cases rise here.

I will update the graphics after the weekend. The curve is vertical now. 150 new cases last 24 hours (see link).

Spain, August 17 :

37.000 new cases over just last week.

A whooping rise of cases, mostly affecting Madrid and Catalunya

but also locations popular with cruisers: Baleares and Canary Islands.

Tasmania's borders will stay closed till December. Note the source is the Australian abc, not the American abc.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-...ember/12569504

Some people are still arriving from other parts of Australia, but they have mandatory, supervised, hotel quarantine for 14 days. Self funded, and running, according to rumor, about $3500 per stay. Someone arriving by sailboat would also have to pay berth rental.

Peter,

The same thing here. Either a server error or the newspaper deleted the page for some reason.

Spain has stopped publishing coherent data. For a time now we are only given point data, in a manner that makes good analysis difficult. There are some third party trackers that are trying to make sense of the data made available. E.g. :

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Worldometer re-publishes Ministry of Health data, trying to make sense of the contorted weekend data. I think they are making a good job there.

according to which yesterday we had 3715 new cases - this represents a whooping 1% per day growth of the number of detected cases.

We are also seeing a big growth in daily deaths. Now at 127 from 5-10 cases earlier this month. Which indirectly confirms the growth of new cases is estimated correctly by the trackers.

I am in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. The situation here is very bad. While during the spring bout Las Palmas was only very lightly affected, now in the second wave we are getting most cases. I have been tracking local (Canary Islands totals, not Las Palmas figures) over the last 150+ days.

To get from 1200 active cases down to 200 cases took us long 50 days, but now it took only 10 days to build up from 200 active cases to 1250 cases. This is telling you how very serious the situation is here.

Meanwhile, some islands have zero cases. last time I looked up, el Hierro, la Gomera and la Graciosa were clean.

So it is all very complex locally in Spain, with global situation very bad and with huge variation between the bad spots and the clean ones.

Canary Islands Covid - Active Cases August 20

This is how we got onto the second wave, mind how steep the growth is this time:

Canary Islands, Spain, EU.

Darn, another (winter) weekend lost to lockdown - Auckland region level 3 extended to Sunday 30 August midnight. Still no boating.

Re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

I repost this from the thread dedicated to Canary Islands and Las Palmas:

---

Coronavirus Covid-19 update from Las Palmas (Canary Islands, Spain) August 25, 2020.

In the news today: Las Palmas on its way to another lock-down, unless something changes:

https://www.laprovincia.es/sociedad/...a/1311881.html

Las Palmas has 1440 out of 2500 active cases in the islands.

Below the graph, updated. Please note when last lock-down was eased, we had 600 cases here. Now we have 2500 cases (sic!). The bars are stock full of people drinking, kissing and laughing but masks are obligatory in the streets.

Graph sources and methodology - read earlier posts.

We have not seen any relevant messages from the marina's manager, nor from the ARC (ARC still intends to depart from Las Palmas, disregarding the rapidly deteriorating health situation here).

Local moods, among those who can read, somber. Last confinement lasted 50 days. We were not allowed to leave the boats, except for going to the toilets and limited shopping.

Regards,
barnakiel

Re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

Spain's second lock-down in the mouth of the prime minister, with situation explained in good English this time:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...virus-lockdown

Spanish PM announces a second lock down is on the agenda, despite the fact that a second state of emergency could only be called for by the Parliament NOT by the prime minister.

I am going to stock our boat up with supplies this week. Just in case what sounds a likely story today will become my reality (again!) next week.

Re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

A stay-at-home order for the island O'ahu went into effect Thursday morning, August 27th. Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell says the order will last for two weeks.

Hawaii yesterday set a new record for positive cases.

Re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

Stay home orders also expected in Canary Islands. No details given yet by the Mayors but a forewarning issued in local press.

I will update when details for Las Palmas are given.
