re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

There's no real alerts In Washington State related to cruising but all the bars and restaurants are closed. Plus all the other big capacity venues. There is a small but popular cruising and charter biz in the summer here so we'll have to see how that works. On the up side the weather is really nice now.

Belgium drastically tightened its restrictions on citizens, banning all unnecessary movements and gatherings of people and keeping only food stores and pharmacies open for customers. The measures go into effect Wednesday noon and will last until April 5. A ban on travel abroad was also announced.

Violating strict confinement measures in place in Luxembourg since Monday could lead to fines of as much as 10,000 euros ($11,000), even a small prison sentence, local news outlet RTL said. Police started doing checks across the country on Tuesday and will continue to do over the coming days, according to a statement by the national police.

There were at that date 400 open surgical/medical beds available in all of the healthcare facilities, although there are some additional non surgical / medical beds that could be pressed into use at hospitals to supplement the 400 then available beds. If 1% of the population becomes ill and needing hospital treatment that would be more than 2 times the available beds to place them in. Going to be very challenging and all the more reason to have a shelter in place lockdown so as to flatten the curve to not over tax the capacity of the health facilities.

Simple, guidance: Act as if you are the vector and stay away from others.
1% of 1 million is 10,000. That is a hell of a lot more than ‘2 times’ the 400 beds you said are available. No offense, but I don’t trust you on that number either.

Stay safe out there people.

Good catch on the percentage, indeed .1% would be 1,000.

There are only 17 hospitals in Montana with a total of 2,202 beds, of which 400 beds were open, unoccupied as of two days ago. There are now 8 cases of COVID-19 tested positive with about 700 test kits remaining.

Belgian authorities have explicitly stated that the ban in Belgium on outdoor sports includes sailing in Belgian waters e.g. the North Sea, although I guess it means you cannot depart from a Belgian port.

Isles de Saints and Marie Galante on Guadeloupe have been closed for all but residents of the islands, so no people from Guadeloupe itself and no tourists are allowed entry.

It doesn’t say how they will treat the ~50 cruising boats at anchor in Terre de Haut’s anchorages. Probably a quick visit to the bakery for baguettes is still OK, but that is just my guess.

re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

Canada and the United States are finalizing a deal to close their shared border to non-essential travel — an extraordinary measure designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Once finalized, the mutual agreement would close the border to tourists and shoppers, while still allowing Canadians to return home. The final deal is expected to allow most commercial traffic to continue, to keep critical supply chains intact.
Normally, nearly 200,000 people cross that border, every day.

OOPS! I see RBK beat me to it.

It's estimated that, every infected person passes the virus on to about two people (R0 of between 1.4–3.9). The fewer social contacts each of us has, the fewer opportunities for the virus to jump from person to person.
Mathematician Amy Hurford created an interactive graph, to demonstrate the effects of social distancing.
On her graph O represents business as usual, with no social distancing. At the other end of the scale 1 represents complete isolation. The slider shows the effect, on the epidemic curve, at various degrees of social distancing. It gives you some idea, of the difference you can make, through social distancing.
The math behind “Flatten the Curve”
https://ahurford.shinyapps.io/flatten-the-curve/

Since it takes about five days for symptoms to appear, and another six or seven days for people to become sick enough to seek medical help, the cases being counted now, were infected in the first few days of March. An outbreak is not over, until you have two incubation periods, without any new incident cases. Each incubation period is about 14 days.

No major US/Canada land border delays (either direction), at time of this posting. Some border points of entry may be closed (ie: Buffalo/Niagara Falls Whirlpool Bridge).

Stones “No Filtre” tour postponed:
The Rolling Stones announced the postponement, of the North American leg, of their “No Filter” tour, which had been scheduled to kick off in Miami, on April 20. According to the announcement, Mick Jagger “has been advised by doctors that he cannot go on tour, at this time, as he needs medical treatment. The doctors have advised Mick that he is expected to make a complete recovery so that he can get back on stage, as soon as possible.”
While the nature of the 75-year-old singer’s ailment was not revealed, and a rep for the group had “no further information,” a source close to the situation says that “he’s not bed-ridden” and in fact was seen at a Miami restaurant with bandmembers on Friday night; that sighting was also reported in the New York Post.
The tour is expected to resume in three months. According to the Post, doctors “found something” that required “immediate attention” and recommended treatment at a U.S. hospital. “This is not a serious thing,” a source close to the band said.

They showed a grocery store and there was plenty of TP but bottled water seemed to have been hit hard. The store was well stocked.

Dare County, NC has setup road block and is not allowing people into the county without a permit or papers proving residency or work requirements.

Dare County covers a good bit of the outer banks of NC and this appears to be land based only but who knows.
