re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

Home Test Kits Coming to UK:
The British government says that, within days, it will begin large-scale serological testing that will show whether a person has been previously infected with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
The ‘finger-prick’ tests will be available to buy from Amazon and pharmacies, and can be performed at home.
If the roll-out goes ahead as planned, the country could become the first to implement at-home testing on this scale.
Many questions remain unanswered: how accurate the tests will be, who will make them and how they can be manufactured in sufficient amounts.

Correct, the patient is on their stomach rather than their back, for much of the day (17-18h).

If you are interested in the topic, the first publication on prone positioning (2013) can be found here: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1214103

It reduces mortality rates of ARDS patients on ventilators by about 10%, which is significant, if you can get a ventilator (thinking of the triage applied to patients in Italy where ventilators are in short supply compared to patient load).

Interesting.

In patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), early application of prolonged prone-positioning sessions significantly decreased 28-day and 90-day mortality.
I always get the two confused.

re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

There have been many reports of people recovering then being infected again, now there are many genetically different versions of this virus, if this becomes the new "COLD", where there is no vaccine nor immunity, we are in big big trouble!

Supply chain and monetary issues will be the least of our worries.

I am thinking what would be the best boat to take? Electric hobs would be ideal with lots of solar and watermaker.

... I've got some factual news. I just farted and it stank baaad. More factual than anything most will hear on CNN or msnbc.
Actually, that’s exactly the type of reporting, I’d expect from most major news/entertainment outlets.
A fact (farted), overshadowed , and obfuscated, by an opinion (stank baaad).

Sources of information, or evidence, are often categorized as primary, secondary, or tertiary material.
Primary Sources are immediate, first-hand accounts of a topic, from people who had a direct connection with it, generally without any interpretation or commentary. In the Sciences, primary source documents focus on original research, ideas, or findings published in academic journals. These articles mark the first publication of such research; and they detail the researcher’s methodology and results.
Secondary Sources are one step removed from primary sources, though they often quote or otherwise use primary sources. They can cover the same topic, but add a layer of interpretation and analysis.
Tertiary Sources of information are based on a collection of primary, and secondary sources.
“News” reporting is, either, a secondary or tertiary, source of information. It's up to the consumer, to discern fact, from opinion.

It seems the Philippines here have peaked at 803. No new cases in the past day. We’ll see tomorrow!
54 deaths as of right now.

I'm not seeing the clear daily taper off yet in the Philippines. Hopefully soon.

Domestic travel by plane or train will soon (Noon ET Monday) be off the table for anyone exhibiting symptoms of coronavirus, in Canada.
Transport Canada
On March 30, new measures will be in effect for intercity passenger rail services. Railway operators must screen travellers for #COVID19 symptoms, and deny entry to those who show signs of illness. These measures will not apply to commuter trains. http://ow.ly/n0v750yYAIH

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan further restricted movement and banned large gatherings, saying in a televised speech that everyone must observe a “voluntary quarantine” or face more stringent controls.

Erdogan said all flights abroad are suspended and intercity travel is banned unless officially authorized.

California ICU Patients Double (5 p.m. NY March 28, 2020)

California’s COVID-19 patients in intensive care more than doubled to 410 overnight as the coronavirus outbreak killed more than 100 in the state, Governor Gavin Newsom said. The state needs 10,000 working ventilators, he said.

“You start doing the math this is now made more real,” he said.

California has 4,252 ventilators, of which 1,000 need to be refurbished, he said. Elon Musk got more than 1,200 units for the state, he said, and 350 manufacturers have offered to help. Richard Branson has freed up a 747 plane that will fly test kits and personal protection equipment into the state’s Bay Area, Newsom said.

Florida governor plans checkpoints to screen Louisianians, suspend vacation rentals as cases pass 4,000

When the number of coronavirus deaths reached 54 in Florida on Saturday, Gov. Ron DeSantis told the state's surgeon general, Dr. Scott Rivkees, to get on the phone and send a public health alert to every Florida resident.

The message Rivkees texted Saturday afternoon was a repeat of the advisory he issued Wednesday, that people 65 and older, and those with underlying medical conditions, should stay home and avoid crowds, and everyone should practice "social distancing."

By Saturday evening, the number of coronavirus cases in Florida stood at 4,038, more than a fivefold increase from a week ago, when the state reported 706 infections. The death count creeped up to 56.

The virus has been particularly fatal for those over the age of 65, with that group making up 89% of statewide deaths. Another 35% were between the ages of 55 and 74, while people younger made up 4% of the fatalities and those over 85 were 19% of deaths.

On Friday, he issued an executive order expanding a previous directive that airline travelers from the New York City area self-quarantine for 14 days to include people from Louisiana who enter the state on Interstate 10.

The order would not apply to commercial transportation.

New Orleans is experiencing a coronavirus surge of more than 1,000 infections linked to the Mardi Gras celebration in February, sending Louisiana's total number of cases past 3,300 as of Saturday. DeSantis wants to intercept any Louisiana travelers from “seeding” the virus in Florida.

It's about a three-hour drive from New Orleans to Pensacola, Florida, and panhandle officials had expressed concerns to him about travelers fleeing the Bayou State and carrying the virus into Florida.

On Friday, he said the state would suspend vacation rentals for two weeks, telling visitors, "If you're in one now, finish and go home."

Despite a growing support among lawmakers to do so, DeSantis has refused to issue a statewide lockdown limiting residents' movements like 22 other states have done in some fashion. Instead, he has preferred to let local governments decide. At least 10 counties have imposed some form of restriction, closing non-essential businesses and advising residents to stay home.

Local restrictions are tight in South Florida with orders in place in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, which report nearly half of the state’s infections.

Hillsborough and Pinellas counties have also issued directives as have Orange and Osceola counties in Central Florida. Some communities, including Leon County, have also imposed curfews, and many have threatened to enforce with arrests or fines as high as $500.
