A shout out to jackdale for his post of the notice of the Canadian Coast Guard.

Canadian Coast Guard asks B.C. mariners to stay home to prevent spread of COVID-19

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...d-19-1.5545405

Snipets from the open letter of Canadian Coast Guard assistant commissioner Roger Girouard.

'The open water is tempting, but we are also navigating uncharted waters right now,'

So far this year, the coast guard has responded to a greater number of search and rescue calls compared to the same time last year.

Each time they respond to a call, search and rescue workers put themselves at risk of exposure to COVID-19 and use personal protective equipment that is needed by critical care workers.

Unnecessary boating trips increase the risk to search and rescue workers,

"Home and within close proximity to health care is the best place you can be right now," he said. "I know that seafarers are both self-reliant and fairly cautious.

"It's time to take those principles to heart, keeping an eye to being on the water without impacting others."

Similarly, in my home State of Montana, the Governor and the law enforcement and Search and Rescue volunteers also are requesting people avoid any and all at risk type outdoor activities so as to mitigate against the potential of needing emergency services. Stay At Home / Stay near home.

B.C. coastal communities are urging people not to visit in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus and minimize strain on limited local health-care resources.

The Heiltsuk Nation on the central coast has issued a bylaw banning non-residents from visiting and are turning away travellers on yachts and sailboats. Girouard said those who choose to travel to coastal communities may not have access to fuel and other supplies when they arrive.

He is asking anyone who is sick or has been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 to resist the temptation to get on a boat.

So no coastal cruising between towns and villages and stay at home if you’re sick or been in contact with those who are sick.

Re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

The statewide stay-at-home order for Hawaii has been extended until May 31, Gov. David Ige announced during a press conference Saturday. It had been set to expire on April 30.

Travelers arriving to the state must quarantine for 14 days until the end of May.

Only about 100 travellers are arriving each day on a couple of flights. ONe must have a hotel reservation and it will be confirmed by the airport security by calling the hotel.

Correct. NOTAMs are Notices to Airmen (pronounced "NO tams"). They are published as needed by the FAA. NOTAM contents are as described by Montanan above.

In the US, notices to mariners are abbreviated "NTM". NTMs are published weekly by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

Below example: "Notice to Mariners (NTM) 18/2020."

Welcome to the new normal as to eliminating travel of any kind for leisure or non-truly essential purposes.

The Canadian Coasties have asked that no one go boating for recreational purposes. The US Auxiliary Coast Guard has expressed similar sentiments.

And now the flight attendants are formally requesting such mandate of the US government.

Flight attendant union to America: Please don't fly for leisure amid coronavirus

Adriana Belmonte Associate Editor
Yahoo Finance April 25, 2020

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/c...203839009.html

The coronavirus pandemic has led to a major decrease in air travel, and the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) wants Americans to fly as little as possible amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“We believe that... ensuring air travel is not aiding in the spread of the virus requires a halt to all leisure travel until the pandemic is brought under control according to health authorities,” AFA President Sara Nelson stated in an open letter to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Health Secretary Alex Azar.

That would eliminate most every yacht charter activity and many yachties whose boats are distant from their homes. And would curtail flying in crew to aid in passage making.

Most businesses will not let their employees travel for obvious employer liability considerations, so the entire airline industry and hospitality industry are a bust for a long time to come.

Illinois:

Governor Pritzker announced yesterday that he will be signing an extension of Illinois Stay At Home Order. The order, originally set to expire on April 30, will be extended through May 30. The extension has not yet been released but is reported to modify the original Stay At Home Order as follows:

Essential businesses and manufacturers will be required to provide face-coverings to employees that cannot maintain six feet distancing

There will be new occupancy limits on essential businesses for employees and customers

New precautions will be taken for essential businesses including staggering shifts, and operating only essential lines for manufacturers

Non-essential retail may operate with pick-up and delivery

Individuals will be required to wear face coverings in public

State parks will begin a phased re-opening, with fishing in boating in groups of no more than two people permitted, and golf will be permitted under strict safety guidelines

Re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

Michigan:

Governor Whitmer signed executive order 2020-59, extending the previous “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order through May 15.
The new order requires people to wear homemade face coverings when they enter enclosed public spaces. It will also lift some restrictions on outdoor activities and allow some workers who perform previously suspended activities to go back to work. The order will ease up on some restrictions on members of the public. It will, for example, allow motorized boating and golf (but no golf carts), consistent with sound social distancing. It also permits individuals to travel between their residences, though such travel during the epidemic is strongly discouraged. And it clarifies that state parks remain open, as they have been throughout the emergency.

Water quality test results were just announced and the water quality was pronounced excellent and safe. Having been peripherally involved with some of these, in various locations in the US, this came as no surprise to me, although it may have surprised some of the dirt dwellers, and to Mr. Bryan.

Re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

These are the 6 new possible symptoms of the coronavirus the CDC added to its list

https://www.yahoo.com/news/6-possibl...154906818.html

Chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat and a loss of taste or smell.

Those are the six new symptoms the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cautioned could be signs of the coronavirus.

The additions come as health experts' understanding of the confounding disease evolves. The CDC previously listed fever, cough and shortness of breath as symptoms.

Shortness of breath was tweaked to "shortness of breath or difficulty breathing" by the CDC.

Coronavirus patients can experience a diversity of issues – from mild symptoms to severe illness. These symptoms generally appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Patients may be most infectious in the days before they began showing symptoms, studies show.

The expanded CDC list is significant: Most testing sites require a patient to have a COVID-19 symptom before the individual can be tested.

The CDC recommends seeking "medical attention immediately" for trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure on chest, bluish lips or face or a new "confusion or inability to arouse."

Re: corona virus alerts - Latest cruising Information for vessels/locations/rules

I had shortness of breath yesterday and muscle pain today. I'm doomed.
The bike ride yesterday had nothing to do with it.

I took another very scenic ride along the Sound yesterday and there were a boats out both power and sail. I am alerting the readers on this thread that the Sound is still open for biz.

And if any locals want more info on this really nice mostly waterfront ride just let me know.

Glad you were out enjoying some Spring time exercise.

Would that be Peter Puget's Sound, a.k.a. the Whulge (or Whulj)?

By my observations the southern Chesapeake Bay (VA side) was certainly open for business yesterday (Sunday) as I saw many recreational boats out. Unless it's been extended, I hear MD will allow recreational boating on the upper Bay again on May 1st. Let's hope this becomes the "new normal" as more and more areas slowly and carefully start to emerge from their lockdowns and stay-at-home orders. Partisan politics notwithstanding . . .

Bay Bulletin has reported on the differences between Maryland and Virginia’s current boating regulations. Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s executive order “permits continued engagement in outdoor activities that can be beneficial to us all.” The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) and Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) says recreational boating is allowed as long as boaters maintain at least six feet from other people [i.e., non-cohabitants] who aren’t family, household members, or caretakers.

Virginia bans gatherings of 10 or more people, including:

“- When present at access points for fishing or boating, whether state or locally-owned;
– The beaching of vessels on sandbars, islands or banks while out on the water;
– The “rafting” of vessels together; and the numbers of individuals present on any vessel.
– When present at outdoor recreation lands, including Wildlife Management Areas.“

Virginia says its Conservation and Marine Police officers will be monitoring water access points and activity on the water, even as recreational boating remains allowed.

” Virginia's DGIF and VMRC want the outdoors to be a place of safe escape for you during this difficult time, and our ability to continue to promote this depends upon your assistance.”

Charter fishing, meanwhile, is considered a nonessential business in Virginia, say the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, and charter boats may not operate. In Maryland, on the other hand, charter fishing is considered essential as part of the food supply chain, and is allowed.

That region, Peter Puget's Sound is the primary estuary of the Salish Sea, which major bodies of water are the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget's Sound. It reaches from Desolation Sound at the north end of the Strait of Georgia to Oakland Bay at the head of Hammersley Inlet at the south end of Puget's Sound.

Whulge (or Whulj), is an anglicization of the Lushootseed name x̌ʷə́lč, which means "sea, salt water, ocean, or sound".

I have the privilege of living within the Flathead Nation of the Confederated Salish Tribes and the Kootenai tribe here in Montaña. The many freeway signs on the reservation are written with the common English name and either the Salish and / or the Kootenai name for the location and the translation of the native language meaning.

The Salish and Kootenai languages use characters and symbols strikingly different from English does, and the translations of place names are written in English only.

Some of the sign names you'll encounter: Evaro, or the "Little Valley Behind the Hills"; Arlee, or "Place of Large Diameter Aspen Trees"; and Jocko Hollow, or "Passing Between Two Ridges Where They Come to an End."

The Polson area, delineating Polson Hill and Flathead Lake as "Beavers Dam" and "Broad Water," respectively.

"Promoting continuity and a sense of unity throughout the Reservation should be a major objective" of the new highway signage, the U.S. 93 Conceptual Design document suggests.

Such bilingual signs are intended to promote respect for the small communities and places along the road and create a better visitor understanding of the place that the Salish and Kootenai people call their homeland.

The signs have Séliš (Salish), Ql̓ispé (also known as Pend d’Oreille or Kalispel), Ksanka (also known as Kootenai) and English languages. They feature the names of the place in each language, as well as an English translation of the native name’s meaning. For example, my home town, The City of Polson, is "Tipi poles above the water"; the Séliš- Ql̓ispé name for Pablo National Wildlife Refuge translates to “Trees-Tapering-to-a-Point Human-made Lake.”

Highway 93 is called "The People's Way." in Salish.
