Thing is... choices have consequences. If people understand and own the consequences of their choice, then fine. And what exactly is the problem HERE on CF? It's not that people have made choices; it's that people have made choices then shown up here to proclaim their choice, shower us with covid denial or anti-vax nonsense, and tell the rest of us that we're sheeple. On a cruising forum, did I mention that?

I'm as guilty as anyone, but I am generally responding to some posted nonsense or BS.
Well yes, choices have consequences. But choice, the ability to choose freely, must absolutely remain part of our way of life. And there's the catch, this is less and less the case, as the consequences of not being vaccinated look more and more like: don't leave your home. Potentially imposed by a majority on a minority as a result of a mis-classification of risk, as we now strive to remove all risks in life.

So yeah, if this is how it is going to be, I am not sure I want to be a part of the majority. Prefer to meditate at home, then be plumbed into a vaccination machine inviting me to show up for my next fix every six months or so. I will retain my right to choose and I understand there may be well be consequences. Doesn't make me an anti vaxxer and doesn't make me a conspiracy theorist.

Small request though while I sit at home, meditating: maybe those who have followed the science and got the vaccine can also follow the science on climate change and make a similar personal contribution for the greater good to turn this situation around too? Just like with covid.

And yet, once again, let's remember that there are some people who CANNOT get the vaccine, because of pre-existing medical conditions. Are we going to prohibit them from participating in life? It seems more and more like that is the direction that we are going.

We don't require people to carry and present proof that they have been vaccinated against anthrax, cholera, hepatitis, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, the flu, or any of the dozens of other airborne diseases that kill millions of people across the globe every year. Sure, COVID might be worse (right now) than any one of these others, but the others combined together kill many more than COVID has or is likely to.

I think that our covid-fatigue, especially in the better-off and more-vaccinated countries, is blinding some to the fact that the pandemic is still a global threat, and might continue to make the rounds as variants if we fail to crush it sooner, and everywhere. There's a bit more at stake than balancing personal risks, and countries that can't get to 70+% of their populations vaccinated or otherwise immune will have a front-row seat to further waves.

And, for all the hand-wringing, no I don't believe the unvaccinated will become confined to their homes. But international travel, large gatherings, anything that creates a significant transmission opportunity... why should an individual's right to refuse vaccination override our collective goal to crush this pandemic? Most folks who are undecided will eventually get vaccinated for pragmatic reasons - eg they want to resume cruising. If someone's "principle" is stopping them from such a simple ask as getting two needles... well, there may be consequences. Given what's at stake, I'm ok with there being some pressure and incentives to get vaccinated.

We all agree that with the exceptions of some condomarans and megayachts, most cruisers are already pretty frugal and practice conservation, out of necessity, mainly. It's also my experience that most people making the case for not screwing up the planet walk the talk to the extent reasonably possible. But, like with COVID, national and international cooperation and action are necessary to effect real change.

Re: Covid vaccine after having covid

FYI.

CDC Says ONLY These People Should Not Get Vaccine

Says the CDC: "If you have had a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or an immediate allergic reaction, even if it was not severe:

to any ingredient in an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (such as polyethylene glycol), you should not get an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

or after getting the first dose of the vaccine, you should not get a second dose of either of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.

An allergic reaction is considered severe when a person needs to be treated with epinephrine or EpiPen© or if they must go to the hospital. Learn about common side effects of COVID-19 vaccines and when to call a doctor.
An immediate allergic reaction means a reaction within 4 hours of getting vaccinated, including symptoms such as hives, swelling, or wheezing (respiratory distress).

If you aren't able to get an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, you may still be able to get a different type of COVID-19 vaccine.

"CDC recommends that people get vaccinated even if they have a history of severe allergic reactions not related to vaccines or injectable medications—such as food, pet, venom, environmental, or latex allergies," says the agency. "People with a history of allergies to oral medications or a family history of severe allergic reactions may also get vaccinated."

If you have a non-severe allergic reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine, here's what to do:

Says the CDC: "If you had an immediate allergic reaction after getting a shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, you should not get a second shot of that vaccine, even if your allergic reaction was not severe enough to require emergency care. If the reaction was after an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna), you should not get a second shot of either of these vaccines. An immediate allergic reaction happens within 4 hours of getting vaccinated and may include symptoms such as hives, swelling, and wheezing (respiratory distress). Your doctor may refer you to a specialist in allergies and immunology to provide more care or advice.

If you get a rash where you got the shot, here's what to do:

Says the CDC: "CDC has learned of reports that some people have experienced a red, itchy, swollen, or painful rash where they got the shot. These rashes can start a few days to more than a week after the first shot and are sometimes quite large. These rashes are also known as "COVID arm." If you experience "COVID arm" after getting the first shot, you should still get the second shot at the recommended interval if the vaccine you got needs a second shot. Tell your vaccination provider that you experienced a rash or 'COVID arm' after the first shot. Your vaccination provider may recommend that you get the second shot in the opposite arm."

If the rash is itchy, you can take an antihistamine. If it is painful, you can take a pain medication like acetaminophen or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

All the best regards, stay healthy.

Declared lack of respect for those who refuse to comply with your socialist agenda becomes self-righteousness. Don't matter what the excuse is.

Never thought I would see such utter nonsense, bickering and finger-pointing on a cruisers forum over something as totally stupid as who gets an unlicensed investigational drug, and who doesn't. From all outward appearances, what ya'll really need is rabies shots.

Yet, here you are, spreading more inflammatory nonsense. On a cruisers forum.

People, if you don't want to discuss/debate covid topics, stop posting in them, and maybe ignore these threads.

Okay, so it appears that the dosage of chill pills needs to be increased for some members. Or maybe an inoculation of one of the vaccines administered at its cold storage temperatures.

That, or there needs to be a time out session for some individuals.

Re: Covid vaccine after having covid

Wow a long thread about covid and conspiracy. lol. figured I would get in on this before it really turns into a dumpster fire and gets locked.
Everyone has their point of view, there is no one person that is right on this subject because really this is a nasty virus that took us by complete surprise and we are still learning about it. I understand people are apprehensive of taking an experimental vaccine because it hasnt been tested fully. There are multiple parts to the testing which I will get to in a minute. Yes the covid vaccination was approved for emergency use. but have you ever stopped to think about why it takes so long to really approve a vaccine or any medication for that matter? Money....

The more research that is done the more money they can charge for the medicine or vaccine by claiming research cost. Do you really think they cant figure out what a medication will do and what side effects it will have after a few months and thousands of trials? Please... These companies know what is safe and what will work long before they are stamped for approval. Any anti vaxxer that states they dont trust vaccines clearly dont have their head on strait because they have ALL probably had 10-15 vaccines in their life and AMAZINGLY they have not grown a 3rd leg.

To me this is pure darwin award. get the vaccine, dont get the vaccine, I really dont care. Thin the herd. survival of the fittest. We all know what we need to be doing to survive. If you feel you can handle getting Covid and rolling the dice then great, good luck to you. I am a health care provider and I see people cry about getting a vaccine then have to take care of them when they are drinking themselves to death or doing drugs or any number of unhealthy habbits. I have taken care of body builders in their late 30's that went from perfect picture of health to losing over 100 pounds intubated and looking like skeletor barely hanging on to life after a few months.

So you do you, I got the vaccine, I was worried a little but I figure if all the BS the army pumped into me didnt kill me (ANTHRAX multiple times, yellow fever, and who knows what else) then the covid vaccine wouldnt either. All of you are right to an extent, its free personal choice. Its caring about the people around you, its wanting to survive. But at the end of the day, if you arent living that perfect picture of health ie not drinking and smoking every day, not doing drugs, working out every day then you really cant complain about getting a vaccine (another of probably 15 that you already have ). If any one crying about getting a shot has never been vaccinated then maybe I would give some sympathy.

But hey, I have no complaints, I could die tomorrow crossing the street so at the end of the day who gives a ****...... you do you.....

Yes, I guess we can add irony to the list of things some of these folks don't understand.

Sadly, I'm not surprised by the self-centeredness and lack-of-understanding of some CF posters here. But I continue to be surprised by the lack of responsibility taken by a few of the same (not all).

Having your cake, and eating it too, has never been more apt a description for a few here. But luckily, they really are just a few. This is true here, and it's even more true in the real world.

Despite all the noise the anti crowd makes, they really are a small minority. I'm not one to hit my head against a brick wall. I know there is no reaching these folks. But the honestly hesitant can, and will, come around. Either through education, better outreach, desire for services, or direct incentives, we will get to herd-level immunity.

I've never been in favour of forcing a vaccine on anyone. I'm all for individual choice. But I'm also for individual responsibility. And I'm quite shocked that most who want to make a choice that is clearly counter to societal standards, also somehow expects society to bend to their perspectives.

Cruisers are used to going our ways; sailing against the wind, to force an analogy . But we also accept responsibility for our actions, and don't expect the rest of society to come bail us out if things go sideways.

I don't think there's any value in carrying this discussion on with the few antagonists here. I'm happy to continue sharing information about the covid vaccines.

As I said, if it was only your health that was in play, then I say fill your boots. Do whatever you want. It's why I'm in favour of decriminalizing all manner of recreational drugs, and why I'm fully supportive of individuals doing crazy things like sailing off a small boats.

The difference is that these only (or largely) affect the individual making the choice. The choice to ignore public health actions in a pandemic is patently NOT a choice that only affects the individual. It affects everyone around you.

It's like choosing to drive drunk. Should I have respect for that personal choice? No... and the same goes here.
Whatever. If dissing and shaming the unvaccinated, is what turns your crank, go for it. Knock yourself out.

However, for a more rewarding proselytizing experience I would advise you and your zealot cohorts here to up your game a bit. Refraining from imbecile analogies which equate the legally enshrined right to informed consent with the illegal act of DUI might be a good place to start.
