COVID’s true toll: 18 million dead

The number of people who have died because of the COVID-19 pandemic could be close to 18 million — roughly three times higher than official figures, according to a new analysis [1].
The difference is down to significant undercounts in official statistics due to delayed and incomplete reporting and a lack of data in dozens of countries.

The true toll is based on excess mortality, a comparison of the total reported deaths from all causes in a region or country with how many deaths would be expected given trends in the past few years. Such estimates include deaths from indirect causes, such as people who died because of inadequate medical care in overwhelmed hospitals.

The U.S. is nearing 1 million recorded COVID-19 deaths without the social reckoning that such a tragedy should provoke. Why?

Yes, but how much of this excess mortality is due to undertreatment and underdiagnosis of other deseases during the lockdowns?

Actually, if everyone on Earth read this one, then acted on it next time we get a new highly infectious coronavirus, we might stop it... the way we did with the other deadly coronavirus outbreaks in the 21st century, SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV

That was at least mentioned as a reason for initial numbers being too low. Some of the extra is accounting for people who died because overwhelmed hospitals couldn't treat them adequately or in time for something that would otherwise have probably not been fatal.
