Yes, we know we can do Sechelt Inlet, Jervis, lower Desolation, etc, but our goals are North of Caution.

PS Scorpius, where was it in Gwaii Haanas did you have kelp/rope issues?
Cape Caution eh? One of my favourite places! For four summers in the 60's I paid my way through school working Fisheries Patrol up there. For three summers I worked Smith Inlet, Smith Sound, and Queen Charlotte Sound. The fourth I was in Rivers doing the sports fishery. Good fun!: an 18 year old kid trying to tell 60 year old gillnetters what to do!

I don't remember the name of the Inlet we were in in Gwaii Hanas (I suppose I could look it up) but it was on the east side down near Rose Harbour.

The RCMP checked us in the Octopus Islands last summer - but of course they were looking for Americans.

When and if the borders do open..

You guys have experience, knot eye.
Last cruising boat here was maybe a 15 degree heel plane. Tune rig to flat strap.
Looking at something more ploughing.

How does below waterline paint handle long days of exposure?

Although ironically a lie as knowledge is do,
Building a knowledge basis per future reference.
Any tricks with long passage antifouling?

Let the good times roll .

There have been 1 or 2 other posters that carried on like that. One we thought was a bot. Either way, a general nuisance.

Do we have to apply the Turing Test?

In 2011 we anchored in Heater Harbour. As we didn't like our first anchor spot, we brought the anchor up to move. Rocna was full of kelp (almost 1 m high) and our windlass struggled as it all came close to surface, then stopped. We taped a carving knife to end of pole, and kelp sliced off as easy as a hot knife through butter. Went through this 3x (the last being the morning we left Heater for overnighter to Vancouver Island (when we got to experience nearly being stalled - - in the dark, multiple time - - by huge broken-off islands of kelp from earlier storm)

Avoided Heater in 2018 Haida Gwaii trip (though, besides the kelp, we liked Heater).

I don’t think it would be a bad idea.[emoji41]

So you can understand the challenge we had with that same ton of kelp PLUS a length of polyprop wrapped in the wheel. I think the rope was originally tangled in the kelp and when it went into the prop it pulled all that kelp in with it. As you say, it was easy to get the kelp off with my dive knife - but the line took quite a bit longer.

We went from Heater to Shearwater. Quite short on fuel at that point as we had been exploring down from QCC for a couple of weeks and didn't want to have to go back.
