Experts predict Mediterranean tsunami with 100% probability

There is a 100% chance of a tsunami, of at least 1 metre in height, occurring in the Mediterranean, in the next 30-50 years.

According to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO*, a tsunami measuring over 1 meter (3.2 feet) will hit the Mediterranean in the next 30 years. The danger zone is reported to be the Averroes fault, beneath the Alboran Sea, which is halfway between Spain's Málaga coast and North Africa.
Experts say an earthquake beneath the Alboran Sea could cause six-meter (19-feet) waves, which could reach Spain in just 21 minutes. It's estimated that coastal residents would have 35 minutes to flee inland.

The Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme (ODTP) is a pioneering initiative by UNESCO-IOC to strengthen tsunami safety around the world by bringing together governments, warning systems, and coastal communities through coordination of information and educational activities.

A single expert predicts - In 30 to 50 years at least half of cruiserforum members will be gone and will not have the chance to see the tsunami... lol

Re: Experts predict Mediterranean tsunami with 100% probability

The speed and height of the tsunami wave depends on the depth of the ocean floor. In areas of the Pacific, where the ocean depth is 20,000 feet, tsunami waves are less than a foot high, and move at speeds of about 550 mph. The tsunami wave length can stretch nearly 100 miles, and this large wavelength allows the tsunami to travel great distances, while losing little energy. As the wave encounters shallower, water the speed of a tsunami wave slows, and the runup height increases. In about 300 feet of water, a tsunami wave will slow to about 60 mph, and in 30 feet of water, the wave will slow to 20 mph.

Tsunamis in the Pacific Ocean typically have wave heights between 6-9 meters.
Tsunami wave heights in the Atlantic Ocean are generally smaller, averaging around 3-5 meters.
Tsunamis in the Mediterranean Sea usually have wave heights ranging from 1-3 meters.
Tsunamis in the Indian Ocean typically have wave heights ranging from 2-5 meters.
Tsunamis in the South Pacific Ocean usually have wave heights ranging from 5-10 meters.
Tsunamis in the Arctic Ocean typically have wave heights of less than 1 meter.
Tsunamis in the Antarctic Ocean usually have wave heights ranging from 3-6 meters.
Tsunamis in the Southern Ocean typically have wave heights ranging from 4-7 meters.

In the deep ocean, the wavelength of a tsunami (the distance between waves) may be hundreds of miles, but its waves may be barely noticeable and are rarely more than three feet high. Mariners at sea will not normally notice tsunamis as they pass beneath their hulls. As the waves enter shallow water near land and slow down, their wavelengths decrease, they grow in height, and currents intensify. When they strike land, most tsunamis are less than 10 feet high, but in extreme cases, can exceed 100 feet when they strike near their source. The first wave may not be the last or the largest. A large tsunami can flood low-lying coastal areas more than a mile inland.

Not all tsunamis act the same, and an individual tsunami may affect coasts differently due to offshore and coastal features. Reefs, bays, entrances to rivers, undersea features, and the slope of the beach can all influence the size, appearance, and impact of tsunamis when they strike the coast. A small nondestructive tsunami in one place may be very large and violent a few miles away..."
