Import Duty/VAT - Sails

Hi,
I am trying to find out what the import duty/VAT is on sails being sent from Australia to an Australian Registered yacht currently wintering in a Greek Marina (Leros).
NB: whether or not there are taxes to be paid, is not the issue, simply seeking clarification on if there are and how much.
Any information or even a point in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
JB

Check with the local Customs Office, they should at least be able to point you in the right direction. There may be a way to get the sails in duty free for a yacht in transit, there is in French overseas places, but one has to start with the local Customs and also the Port Captain, arrangements have to be made before the sails arrive.

Good luck with it,

Ann

Re: Import Duty/VAT - Sails

Many thanks Ann; great advice. I have asked the marina office to contact Customs on my behalf.

Safe sailing

Re: Import Duty/VAT - Sails

Just bring them in with your luggage. You should be duty and VAT exempt if the boat is foreign flagged.

It may be cheaper to buy new sails from Easy sails in Israel and get them delivered with another passing yacht. Mr Easy is now under the North sails logo and a great supplier. If in the area he may visit and then recommend a solution. Here in Cyprus they will add vat and import duty if they can so will be far worse in Greece.
Look at his web site North Sails. hope it helps.

I found sails to be exempt - 7 years ago.
