If to stay on Atlantic coast, head to south, stock with wines in Bordeaux and oysters in Arcachon and stay in Hendaye (Irun) on the border with Spain (but choose french marina). There you may go for tapas on a dingy to Spain or enjoy tartar de bef in multiple restaurants round marina. Bearitz to San Sebastian by car. Barcelona is in 500km by a good highway through Pamplona etc. Madrid is ?380? km.

We lived aboard in La Rochelle two winters ago. We stayed aboard all winter and had a fantastic time.
