Marina business practices in Turkey

I'm contacting several marinas in Turkey asking for a 6 month wintering quote, and some of them are requiring 100% advance payment with the clause that the final price will be different from what quoted, based on the new price they'll have in place in October.

Is this normal?

Turkish marinas usually quote in Euro's not Lira's. Inflation is a good thing for them.

Some Turkish marinas require all work on the boat to be carried out by their own "technical service". No cheaper mechanic/specialist from outside allowed.
Had a $ 600 dead automatic pilot checked - $ 250 for checking. It's still there..

Try Shipyard Karlovasi on the island of Samos Eastern Aegean sea.

Excellent place to winter at reasonable rates. You can either ask the yard to do the work for you or do the work yourself or with outside workshops.

Samos is a Greek island so 90 / 180 Schengen rules apply unlike Turkey..

It is important only if youbwant to live on the boat during winter.
Otherwise fly home and freeze boat's tranzit log.

I do not think that Turkey has any "business practices".

After wintering my boat in Turkey for 6 seasons I disagree. I found them wonderful to deal with, very knowledgeable, very upfront. I also travelled both by water and on land and found them hospitable and kind to a stranger even in places where there was obvious poverty and no electricity or running water. The marinas have been inundated because of Brexit so it’s a sellers market with volatile pricing - a typical feature of sellers markets all over the world.

Advanced payment is OK. They should actually request a bond too. Think of all the cases a boat gets left in the yard, often for years. They have hell of time getting rid of these.

Turkish practices are quite foreign to westerners. #1 is that the price starts high, and then everything gets negotiated. Haggling isn’t a struggle, it is a core element of exchange.

Like everywhere else, treat them like idiots and you’ll not be highly welcomed. Do things their way and it will pay back in spades.

It’s entirely normal to request a particular quote for a particular period and be expected to pay it all in advance.monthly rates will typically be higher. Some marinas do stipulate that new pricing will apply if it comes in during that period , some honour the contact price. It varies.
