North Sea to Black Sea enquiry

Hello - I am new to this forum. I am AFAF sorta. My partner has a motor cruising boat which we want to take from the North Sea to the Black Sea via the Rhine-Rhine/Danube canal and the Danube.

Ages ago I looked into high mast routes across Europe to the Black Sea (our boat is quite big!) and came across a really helpful website which described all the bridges and locks etc but I can’t find it now. There seemed to be one bridge that would be too low for our boat to pass under. I remember messaging the website owner who was very helpful but said that there was no way our boat would get under.

Our boat is 25m long with a draught of 1.5m and an air draught of 6 or 7m! It’s a big beast - having been converted into a domestic cruising boat from a harbour boyage tug. It’s Dutch, currently moored in Essex but we are taking her back to Holland this summer. The mast is retractable to some extent but I think it may be too tall still.

Can anybody advise? either about the website? or bridge heights? We plan to do a recce in July and really check the air draught with the mast retracted and the satellite dome removed etc but it would be useful to know which bridges might be problematic.

Thanks

Susanna

Hi Susie Q
The length and beam (width), is not a problem, and neither is your draft.
Yes, you can leave your mast up a fair way down the Rhine, but you have to strike your mast(s) fairly soon.
I paddled most of that journey in my kayak, now 20 years ago, I vowed then I would do it again, either paddling or in my sailing boat. Hmmm, I never did.
I never took notice of airdraft, as I was thinking that my mast would be horizontal, ie my airdraft would be around 4-5 metres, not a problem.
Have a look at the pictures of the cruising boats there, they are very low!!
I do not know websites where you can check airdraft.
Geluk met je onderneming.

Re: North Sea to Black Sea enquiry

Hi Susanna.

It wont be possible. Only the part on the Rhein has a clearance over 6m. After Frankfurt it will be maximal 5m ( at HSW (Höchster Schifffahrtswasserstand)

Main:
Würzburg*@ 5,75
https://www.elwis.de/DE/Service/Date...cationFile&v=3

Main Danube canal:
Hausen & Kriegenbrunn @ 5,85
https://www.elwis.de/DE/Service/Date...cationFile&v=3

Danube:
Bogen @ 5m at HSW.
https://www.elwis.de/DE/Service/Date...cationFile&v=4

Water Levels:
https://www.elwis.de/DE/dynamisch/ge...wasserstaende/

The eurisportal at
https://www.eurisportal.eu/voyageplanner

comes up with those permissible dimensions:
depth 2.50 m
height 4 m
length 85 m
width 9.50 m
