The customs controls are likely to be even more strict by private boat, than by air.

Most customs and immigration offices that I've seen aren't heavily computerized, with the U.S. being the big exception. If customs decides to check your boat, then it will be much more in-depth than at an airport (just think of how much bigger the inside of a boat is than a suitcase), but usually customs isn't as interested in you as is the immigration authority.
