Refugees in Agean

We are planning to sail from Greece to winter over in Turkey. We are concerned with the escalating refugee crisis. Does anyone have any info on the better routes to take?

Re: Refugees in Agean

You are most unlikely to be affected.

Most of the traffic is in rubber dinghies taking very short trips from the Turkish mainland to the nearest Dodecanese island. Main landing islands are Lesbos, Agathonisi, Chios, Kos, Rhodos, with a few others occasionally used.

Relax. You're going the other way. Nobody is going to try and hitch a lift!

Oh but wait... maybe Jaramanpotter wants to help. He's looking for a route he can take that will help keep refugees safe. He'll be ready to stand by and assist in the event of capsize, MOB, engine trouble, etc.

We will honor our responsabilities under international Maritime Law. Maybe Sun and Moon is in the area offering that assistance.

Re: Refugees in Agean

We just sailed into Kusadasi Turkey for the winter and came up from Kos. We saw a ton of refugees on all the islands coming north but none at sea. Kos was a bit of a problem as they are everywhere but there is security on the dock that keep them away and off the docks. The islands keep them all in one place and under security.

We did talk about it and when in Italy talked to the CG there and our response if we saw some at sea was to lay off a bit and call the CG and wait on their response. There are boats out there everywhere watching so do not worry about.

Where in Turkey are you spending the winter?
