Sailing in Croatia

I am headed to Croatia in August with my wife and 2 friends. we are chartering out of split on a 46ft monohull. It is our first time out there. I have questions on anchoring, fees, best towns to see, best spots to get away from crowds.

I am looking for any advice and recommendations for my itinerary for the 6 days we will be at sea.
It is our first time sailing in Croatia.
we want to have a mix of village life and quiet serenity.

thanks any comments are appreciated.

Re: sailing in croatia

Amesh,

I would suggest you check the previous threads on Croatia.

We are going for three weeks in June and I still can't come close to fitting all the destinations I want to visit in. I haven't sailed there before but would suggest from Split going to Milna on Brac, then Hvar, Vela Luka, Vis, back to Hvar (Pakleni this time), then back to Split.

Boat: So many boats to choose from. Would prefer something that is not an AWB, and that is beachable...

August is the busiest month in Croatia. All the Italians will be there too, with their boats, so you better be sure to arrive at the anchorages early. Or head out a bit further. With a good wind you can get to Lastovo in a day from Split. That's a good destination to be away from the big fleets.

6 days is nothing for Croatia, not even 6 weeks is enough to see just couple of islands, but parallan gave you good suggestion to start with.

Thank you all for these great responses.

Any more anchorages anyone recommends would be great.
Also what about anchoring? Is it mostly stern lines with an anchor or are there bays large enough and with good holding?

Thanks
Adam

When using a stern line ashore in Croatia just be ready to move if the wind picks up. It can get very interesting in some of the anchorage, as the fleet start dragging anchors. In saying that there are fantastic anchorages and many of the bays have moorings for visitors. I'm looking forward to a return visit if I can just get away from Sardinia and the islands off western Italy. Regards Joe
