Re: Travelling affordably through med?

The Greek islands were by far the cheapest, a lot of the time no charge, free water and power, and the most we paid for a berth for our catamaran was 11€ for a night, which compared to a quote of 300€ for a night in Antibes may explain their economy!

Re: Travelling affordably through med?

This summer will be our 6th summer in the eastern Med. To travel on a low budget, my vote goes for The Greek islands, avoiding the mass touristic islands of Santorini and Mikonos and the coast of Turkey which remain so far very safe despite the current media coverage. Enjoy!

Re: travelling affordably through med?

We, aboard B42 Penelope, spent a month in Albania last year to get around the Schengen thing. Loved it. But did southern coast only.
Email me for any info. We will return this year.

Re: Travelling affordably through med?

Cruising the Med can still be cheap and just as enjoyable as if you spend like a drunken sailor and want to tie up in marinas. We been in southern Turkey and the Dodecanese with our 44' cat for the last two summers and if we wanted, could probably do it per day for two people for

Re: Travelling affordably through med?

.......(continued) about AUS$50 with one modest meal eaten out. Turkey generally has excellent farmers markets at prices less than half of Australia and anchorages are beautiful. Marinas are generally very good, but if you are on a tight budget, forget it. Food costs more in Greek islands because most comes from the mainland, but town mooring is often good, central and inexpensive. Our boat normally costs between €10-15 per night if we choose to tie up, and often power and water is included. Common sense is the golden rule if you want to economise, and the sunrise is the same on any budget.

What's it like these days (i.e.2015, 2016) with the refugee situation in Greece and Turkey?

Re: Travelling affordably through med?

Last year in the Ionian Islands there was NO evidence of refugees. It is all happening on the east side of Greece I guess.

We sailed though eastern Greek island last summer and now in Turkey - yes there are migrants and lots of them but the Greeks have them well under control. There was only one place that they seemed out of control and that was Kos but the local harbor (not in the marina) provided security to keep them off the docks or moving on. Eventually they moved them all inland away from the docks and the tourists areas.
We have a few begging on the streets in Kusadasi but I was told the other day they moved on to another town as the pickings were slim here.

There is really no issues with sailing either.

Namely:

Go to Porto comunale, or city Harbour, and avoid private marinas
It means big commercial harbours in noisy spots, but a few (in Puglia) are gorgeous

Also, opt for bay anchoring (Siracusa is top in the world, imo) ...

Alghero, Sardinia.. after running the gauntlet of rib's offering their slips.. beautiful town and clean quay.. no water and elec tho'.. many many other places.. not all noisy or smelly.. plenty of room to anchor in Syracuse, Sicily.. another interesting and lovely old town..
Try a visit to the other Marmaris.. Evia, Greece then carry on up to Kharis. you'll have to wait till 2300 for the bridge to let you through but clean long free quay to tie up to the other side.. lots of good restaurants and nice people..
Carry on up and there's some gorgeous cruising grounds up there.. very few sailboats.. only locals in the main.
There's just to many places in the Med for me to list.. but then I don't follow the herd..

We sailed Albania twice and loved it -- one of our favorite countries -- if you need or want any thoughts give me a pm and I will tell you what we found. _ have you gone inland by the way? it is an incredible and beautiful country

Re: Travelling affordably through med?

No probs travelling for free in the med, just make sure you have plan it well - Spain is the most tricky one as not many sheltered bays , but still you can find enough , just make sure from which side will be the wind and choose wisely, Greece is the best place and can be 100% free if you are wise again.... Turkey is not my favourite one for various practical reasons ... generally I will suggest : Balearics, Costa Brava, Cote Veemeiile, Cote d'Azure,Sicily, Croatia, Ionian, Aegean, Cyclades - not sure that is good idea to go further east with all new immigrants issues...

What immigrant issue?? We sailed though the Greek islands and yea we saw some but they are not an issue and have no interest in a small sailboat -- it is no more of an issue than anyone else.

what nonsense this is -- it is entirely safe!
