Turkish Regs for holding tanks

Our new boat to us is great. However only has one holding tank for one of the 2 heads.

Have read in the pilot Imray guide that all heads and grey water must have holding tanks as well as a bilge tank! Anyone have up to date info on if this rule is being enforced? No way we could comply. Not suggesting that we little dump everyplace but really.

Thanks in advance

Re: Turkish Regs for holding tanks

That is going to be a real pain in the gluteus Maximus. No idea how to comply 3 sinks 2 shower sump pumps. 1 Holding tank 50 l.

Anyone want to buy a Turkish cruising guide?

Re: Turkish Regs for holding tanks

wonder if the poop police check all boats? It seems incredulous that smaller boats could handle multiple tanks and the routing of all the piping and valves needed. The bilge is under the same rules.

Re: Turkish Regs for holding tanks

Fwiw, US regs prohibit combining black and gray water in the same tank...but it's a bad idea anywhere because an over-full tank can send the contents into your sinks and shower(s). Just a major PITA if it's only gray water, but a serious health risk if toilet waste is in that mix.

So unless you want to install a separate gray water tank, you want to use only 1 sink and 1 shower while in the waters of any country requiring gray water holding--an idea that's starting to catch on in Europe) and pump out the tank a lot more often.

You could prob'ly make that work for a couple of days in Turkey...

Re: Turkish Regs for holding tanks

the problem is clear as ? . However the solution not so, as the regs say all outlets including bilge have to go into tanks.

Turkey seemed like a good option but maybe not the fines are large.

They've been saying this for years. We live onboard within 10 miles of turkey, many friends coming and going for years. Not a single one has gray water holding, nor does anyone check. It's in the guidelines, I know, but unless you are a king douche to a turkish coast guard or something, they'll never ask.

Re: Turkish Regs for holding tanks

anecdotal evidence (from 95, alleviation unlikely):
pregnant lady pukes into sink which immediately drains overboard.
10.000DM threatened fine, finally reduced through long intervention of our german speaking turkish employee to 1.000DM, flights missed,...
(I was base manager, so first hand)
At the same time abt. 2 nm south of the marina the untreated sewage of the town was led into the sea...

Re: Turkish Regs for holding tanks

I bet this is a similar situation to Spain. There are all kinds rules about holding, dumping, treatment, but no actual support. For example I am not aware of single port within 50nm of me that has pumpout facilities.

These regs are written to keep 30,000
cruise ship passengers a day from taking a dump in the port water in Barcelona. It doesn't make any sense to apply the same rules to a tiny recreational craft.

not easy to comply with the regs: no international waters in the Aegean between Turkey & Greece, no pumpout facilities in either country...

Re: Turkish Regs for holding tanks

I should have written this 1.000 times, "grey water tanks are not compulsory in Turkey, black water tanks are."

Every marina has to have a pump out facility If they don't or decline to take yr black water, you can call Cosat Guard.

Cheers

Good to know. No problem with Black stuff but the grey was definitely going to be a problem. Thanks for the clarification everyone.

Not saying anything

But
“Boats without gray water and black water tanks are being prohibited from entering and anchoring in some popular Turkish cruising areas because authorities are enforcing regulations on the disposal of waste water and effluent.”

As of July 2022

The issue isn’t tanks , it’s discharges

Re: Turkish Regs for holding tanks

Ya seems like this could be a no go zone, unless. So every time you untie the ropes you are one step closer to having to shell out large sums of money. Equipment failure.

So now we add with possible fines. My grey water system now equates to bowls in the kitchen sink and a 5 gal designated water jug lashed to the rail. with 2 gallons of grey water. All about keeping the beautiful environments of the world clean and especially in high volume areas such as the Turkish coast.

But for me to comply with the letter of the law here is beyond my comfort/ability zone. Ill be in Turkey in a month or so so ill post what I find out first hand.

I don't know who is this web site and where from do they get these info, but leaving here, running a charter and yacht service business for 15 years, I say that this is not true.
