If course neither is free, but, if you have a big enough LiFePo4 battery, and plenty of solar you can drive around for a reasonable amount of time. Have an outboard or generator as backup you have emergency range if you need to. Add sails and time (=wait for wind if need be) and you might find yourself rarely using the outboard or generator.

DIY LiFePo4 batteries are very reasonably priced these days if you are willing to built from Chinese cells. They do last well.

In the future I can only assume that electric will be a connection fee + energy use payments.
$100 a month just for the cheapest shorepower hookup? Damn. I will never complain about shorepower fees in the US again.

At my marina, the local electric company has their own meter on every slip, no added or hidden charges. You just pay your light bill just like at your dirtside house.
