8 hp 2 stroke yamaha

I'm in Belize, home of the 45% import duty. I'm transitting north to the US next summer. Any suggestions on good places/countries in the western carribean to buy an 8 hp 2 stroke yamaha on the way, preferably with a duty free port.

if you stop in the B'mas....some places might still carry it...it's not made anymore...I think Yamaha quit making them in the early 2000's....it's a great engine....I love it... it will run forever, can pick it up with one hand, etc...in the US.....many used one's for sale...you'll have to shop around...

Yamaha stopped making them for usa(and maybe canada) that early. I think 06???
European and Asian market continued. I dont know if they still do now, but ours was bought (by previous boat owner) in Philippines. Year 2013(from paperwork)
I heard Nassau, bahamas still sells 2 stroke Yamaha's.

Re: 8 hp 2 stroke yamaha

I've bought 2 stroke engines in the B'mas before (3 of them over the years), much better price than the US..not sure if the 8 hp is available....but it was an extremely popular engine in it's day...it may not be on the show room floor, but ask, when you get there...they may have a cache of them in a storeroom.
In my case, I went to the storeroom with a sales agent...and was floored at the number of engines still in crates there...
Nassau would certainly be a good spot to try...

They are still making them, ust don't sell them in the us. I can get one band new from the dealer for 5550 bz = 2775 usd, but sint maartan price is 1775 usd, hoping to find a jurisdiction nearer to belize that doesn't have the whopping 45% import on top of the 12 1/2% vat

Re: 8 hp 2 stroke yamaha

yes, but the USA has many used one's for sale....from individuals...you would not have to pay VAT....duty...or anything else...just make a deal with the owner...you could probably easily pick one up for under $1000....I'd say around $500 will get you one.....
but the B'mas, Nassau, will likely be a good source for a new one..

Re: 8 hp 2 stroke yamaha

If you can't find an 8HP you can likely take a 6HP and convert it to an 8HP (it's a fairly simple change). This is what we did with ours.

We bought our Yamaha 2-hp 2-stroke from the dealer on Bonaire a few years. Got a very good price. That's a lot closer to Belize than Sint Maarten.

Most of the Caribbean is Japan market Yamaha so you can still get 2 strokes.

"Yacht in transit " may work for you. Paper work will suck but....

Cancun or Merida Mexico?

Re: 8 hp 2 stroke yamaha

One of my all time favorite motors; it's crazy that it's banned just because it's a 2-stroke. The automatic pre-mix is so miserly that I put less oil into it than I put into a 4-stroke 20hp Honda. It weighs less than the suitcase my admiral brings on board for a weekend! There's one for sale https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/b...8?bof=mfQl0u2Q just up the Kerikeri Inlet from where we are now. I just want to buy it before you can't find another one, just because I like them so much; that $1000 kiwi is only $650 in US money. The admiral is commenting that we already have four motors for one dinghy (3.3 Mercury, 8 Yamaha, 15 Mercury, 20 Honda) so I don't think I'm going to get permission.

BRAINSTORM:
How can I get the Yamaha 8 HP 2 stroke sold to me and transported to DALLAS? Even with a bounty on it's head it could be worth it long term?

A. Sail the boat there, but, then sail back.
B. Get somebody coming from there to buy it, bring it into the US then sell it to you.

I don’t see another legal means to do so.
