Bahamas bareboat vs BVI

Have sailed BVI several times with our children (9 & 11) and looking for another kid friendly destination. How does Abaco/Bahamas compare? In BVI enjoied all the shore activities and beach bars, looking for a similar destination. If Bahamas, where MUST we take the kids to make it a memorable vacation? Thanks for any support and advice.

Re: Bahamas bareboat vs BVI

We've chartered in the BVI and the Abacos - love them both! You'll want to get a copy of Dodge's Cruising Guide to Abaco and watch your depth. The sailing isn't any more challenging but the navigation is a little more difficult.

There's less nightlife and beach bar activity in Abaco versus the BVI. We tend to eat more meals on board, and it's possible to have an anchorage all to yourselves. But that adds to the adventure! Elbow Cay and Guana have lots to offer both adults and kids. The kids might also like Tilloo Banks, south of Elbow Cay. It's a large sandbar and great swimming spot. Further south is the Pelican Cay Land and Sea Park if you're into snorkeling. And Little Harbor is another nice overnight spot if you go down that far.

We like the water better in the Bahamas. Agree with Little Harbour recommendation. Also check out Tahiti Beach and Hopetown.

I've never been there and don't remember which Bahamas island it is, but I think the swimming pigs would be pretty memorable.

The swimming pigs are in the Exumas, Pig Beach, Staniel Cay. There are wild pigs on No Name Cay in the Abacos as well but we have never seen them swim. They are very aggressive though.

Thanks for your suggestions. Leaning towards Bahamas since we have never sailed there. We have the option of sailing the first week in April and also August 2016. Which do you think would be better for water temp and weather?

Water temp will probably be warmer in August but is just fine in April as well. Weather is excellent in April but could be a problem in August depending on the tropics. You would just have to keep an eye on the tropical storms.
