Bahamas verse Caribbean

Geez sailorboy if your posts are that grumpy after being off full time cruising maybe you are done...[emoji3]
So, crappy passage. I’ve had them. Boat breakdowns? Beating into nasty chop for hours on end? Navigating coral heads in Bahamas? So we’re left to guess and I assume beating into nasty chop. Well once you get to antigua that’s done. So check on Carib.
And if coral heads are annoying you on shallow banks- Carib.
Now onto the second guess. Why are Bahamas disappointing to you? Too shallow? Carib is better. Too inconsistent wind? Check on Carib. You’re tired of cold fronts? Carib. Not enough sandy beaches? Stay in Bahamas. Too crowded? Leave Georgetown, and go to ragged islands in Bahamas and don’t go to Carib.

There- just read through those and pick the answer that actually answers the question in your mind

Re: Bahamas verse Caribbean

To those that answered the question thanks.

To the rest, glad you got to do what you really hope for on a thread.

Since i realize I was out of my mind for starting this threadI am going to now unsubscribe from it and then place it on ignore. So feel free to take out the stress of your life on me with some witty comments here. I will continue to enjoy my time in the nice water and beaches here in Bahamas, even if this place didn't meet exceptions it most likely is way better than where you are.

>>>I am going to now unsubscribe from it and then place it on ignore.<<<The ultimate show of disrespect for the time and effort given by many.

On my behalf (I shake my head) I thank you all for your efforts and time.

You didn't actually try to go to weather in moderate to strong winds, did you? No wonder your wife is talking about selling the boat.

Exactly. Cryptic nonspecific questions and complaints from OP. Then sharp criticism of posters trying to guess what he wanted to hear but apparently not getting it quite right. Then refusal to clarify anything so folks could be more helpful. Then, a hissy fit when no one guessed right and “stormed out of the room.”

I think he’s been on CF for a while. There’s a lot worse on here in terms of thread drift etc. And no one even bashed his boat and said that going to windward in that hull form is the issue. [emoji3][emoji3]

I'm thinking he's right. Lots of travel agencies that'll pop you into all the cool places without the hassle.

Actually, we're in the Caribbean, so life is not bad.

As an aside, if 16 hours in rough conditions is cause to sell the boat and buy the farm in Iowa then the sail to the Caribbean May not be for you. This year's trip was nine days, five of which were beating into 25~45 true with up to 20' waves. It was a bit sporty.

Some threads are great not because of, but despite the OP.

Thanks for all the information about these places everyone!

Real sailors dont even blink at 35 kts. Difficult destinations are just another welcome challenge.

Joll
am still planning to spend some time south of my home port (NC)
toying with Bermuda vs Bahamas.
If I end up on Bermuda should be easier to jump to a more southerly destination.
However, if I end on the Bahamas, I suspect your 16 hours is somewhere trying to go? where?
thanks

Not sure what you're asking Davil?
We spent the winter in the Caribbean and will depart early May for Maine, sailing through the Bahamas. This fall we'll probably sail to Bermuda then south. That's the plan but covid is always a while card.

not sure myself what my question is

since you refer to upwind and rough sailing was wandering how did you reach the Caribbean.

We departed Norfolk early November, sailing 9 days to St Thomas. Five of the days we're port tack upwind in 25 to 45 true wind with waves up to ~ 20'. We sailed under triple reefed main and staysail. Daily runs we're about 165 miles, it was too rough to go any faster. Hope this helps.

What utter nonsense. Ex macho sailors maybe. Actual offshore cruisers spend a lot of effort planning to avoid the difficult passages and minimize the high wind conditions while doing them. I guess they are all wimps?
