Best Airfare to Georgetown Bahamas?

Hi all,

I"m looking to book air travel from the US (or Toronto) into Georgetown for 4 or 5 people and struggling to find the most economic way to do this?

Has anyone got some good strategies or charter carriers that may not show up on the major websites?

Thanks.
Colin

Re: Best Airfare to Georgetown Bahamas?

... you might want to look Toronto - Nassau and than Nassau - Georgetown.

Are you looking One-Way or with a return flight? Not so easy to find a short flight going to the Bahamas from Toronto (though not expensive but 28h long ;-)) ...

When do you want to go?

You probably want a mix of most economic and not too long ...

Regards,

Carsten

I would think Toronto to Miami, then Miami to Bahamas would give you the most options. Toronto to Bahamas is going to be limited, however EVERYONE flies to Miami. Plenty of smaller airlines running to the Bahamas out of Miami.

Have you looked at Bahamas Tourism website?

How To Get Here - The Exumas - Scheduled Air | The Official Site of The Bahamas

Re: Best Airfare to Georgetown Bahamas?

Thanks for this.

I've checked out all those options and it looks like the best options are to book on American on a single ticket from Toronto. (at least for the dates I'm looking)

The problem with booking 2 legs separately (say to MIA, and then to GGT on a different carrier) is that that short flight to the Bahamas is way more expensive than the first leg.

Cheers
Colin

Air Canada flies YYZ to GGT now. You just have to monitor prices to get the best deal.

They do, but not every day, and it seems like all the best fares are reserved for Air Canada Vacations customers. If you just want air only, it's pretty expensive. For the dates I want to go in March, they only have availability on Thursdays and only in business class at over $2400 return

A friend has a boat in GT and she flies there very economically with Air Canada but she watches the prices constantly and books well ahead. She does three or four trips a year.

Westjet flies YYZ to NAS now. But there might be a connection problem from Nassau to GT. Either Bahamasair or the fast ferry.

I use an Orbitz affiliate called Cheaptickets .com and a quick check out a little shows a Tues. departure and Thursday return 2 weeks out. Delta thru Atlanta $350 US return.

If you are flexible and can depart early a.m. Weekday fares are best.

Just STAY AWAY from Priceline.
We recently used them, they when we got to the airport they had the wrong name on the ticket and believe it or not they would not make the change -- it ended up costing us $2100.00 for a replacement ticket to Manila.
Priceline as stonewalled us on getting any kind of refund. A terrible company to do business with!

Re: Best Airfare to Georgetown Bahamas?

In six trips to the Bahamas last winter for us and our guests from Boston, only half arrived on the expected day. The rest meant an overnight hotel stay halfway. Even if the airline picks up the cost, it means the loss of a vacation day. While we seemed to have unusually bad luck last winter, missed connections and cancelled flights are just a fact of life in the Bahamas especially in winter.

Our three most successful strategies are:

Fly non-stop to Nassau and take SkyBahamas (5:45 flight). Allow three hours in Nassau in case the flight from the states is late. Unfortunately, this means an after dark dinghy trip.

Fly Watermakers out of Fort Lauderdale (means a taxi from FLL to private Fort Lauderdale airport). Not a cheap option.

Fly to Miami and take American.

We will not fly either BahamasAir or Silver (the United partner). Too many bad experiences.

Tell your guests to have enough in their carryon in case they don't see their checked luggage before the flight home.

Re: Best Airfare to Georgetown Bahamas?

It's da Bahamas mon. Soon come dat luggage. Chill!

If you fly a Bahamian carrier (or boat, taxi, bus, etc), you just have to go with the flow. There's no certainty. Not that there's much certainty elsewhere, but there's not even a presumption of certainty in the Bahamas. It's only frustrating if you're in a hurry! Pete

Re: Best Airfare to Georgetown Bahamas?

After 5 years in the Caribbean I have kept my boat in Georgetown over the last two winters. There is no such thing as a cheap flight to GT from anywhere in my experience. It is cheaper to keep a boat in the Caribbean as far as airfare is concerned.
On one occasion while waiting for a flight from Nassau to GTT we missed our flight because of a late arrival and actually had to charter a plane in order to not loose 2 days of our vacation. It was a $1000.00 from Nassau for 4 people!
Not so bad considering what they soak you for such a short flight.
The bad news is I was not sure we were going to make it because the dash was sort of hanging down but the instruments worked, there were a few holes in the wings and a door lock was like the kind you buy at Home Deport. The door jam was repaired with Bondo and oh yes and a spider dropped down on my son but he simply brushed it off.
