Re: Chesapeake Bay

Late to the party here, but for those looking in the future:

Anywhere but Reedville -- unless you have NO sense of smell!

Reedville all depends on how much they're cooking and which direction the wind is blowing. We've been in there countless times, but we do pay attention to prevailing wind. There's a good anchorage right off "the Reedville Market" restaurant and we've used their docks for the dinghy. Not much to the town but some fine Victorian era homes, The Reedville Fisherman's Museum, a couple of decent places to eat and one of the best ice cream parlors on the Bay.
One year, we anchored in Mill Creek just South of Reedville and the wind shifted during the night. We woke up almost gagging the smell was so bad. Had to put handkerchiefs sprayed with perfume over our face, couldn't pull the anchor up quick enough! That was 30-some years ago and they have significantly altered their smoke stacks to reduce the smell and it seems to be much, much better.

Re: Chesapeake Bay

Pretty town for sure. Once was enough. We were tied up alongside the restaurant for the night and the breeze was decidedly NOT in a favorable direction.

Funny story: we were eating dinner outside the restaurant and started chatting with the guys at the next table. One of them is just back for a visit and says "I know a lot of people don't like the smell, but to me it smells like HOME!"

Another well known quote: "You smell that? That's the smell of money!"
Oysters and menhaden paid for all those nice homes.

Re: Chesapeake Bay

Regarding Reedville, if the wind is out of the north you will be OK.

If out of the south, you can go to Ingram Bay Marina. A mom and pop marina with no frills gut there is a gazebo you can relax in.

I believe one of the rendering plants is closed so that should make things better than what it was years ago.

There's also the Horn Harbor marina and restaurant farther up the Great Wicomico.

Little Wicomico and the marina there is OK but you might have to mind the state of the tide

Also prevalent, in Paper Mill towns.

Kraft pulping produces gaseous sulfur compounds, called “total reduced sulfur,” or TRS, gases. The odors these gases give off are often described as rotten cabbage or rotten eggs.
