At the entrance to the Alligator river between the markers expect to go aground. It might have been dredged since my trip up in February but we ran aground there in the middle of the channel. Just use caution in that area. Have a safe trip.

I am in a trawler heading down the ditch about the same time from the bohiama, at what speed does does your boat cruise? I have made 3 round trips to south florida but never considered the dismal swamp rt

Re: Chesapeake to Bahamas 2011-2012

crusing speed is between 5.5 and 6 knts avg.
Done the dismal swamp trip south once before, and the virginia cut both north and south. The dismal swamp route gives you the opportunity to stop at chesapeake city, vs Coincock.

I also ran aground between markers 7 & 8 following my GPS. Took a lot of trouble clearing it. The cruisersnet.net indicates they have moved / added some temporary markers (7a) to stear boats around the shouls. The key is Not to Follow the GPS, but rather the markers.

Saturday Morning Sunrise is approximately 6:00am. Cast off lines at 6:01am.
takes about 1 hour to get to the mouth of the sassafras River so I'll officially begin heading south at 7:01am. Of course as with all things sailing, I never make a plan

Re: Chesapeake to Bahamas 2011-2012

Is it just me, or does the CF search really not work so well? I was just curious to see if there were any folks out there heading to the Bahamas this week. It looks like there could be a possibility on Tuesday/Wednesday. We're in Lake Worth, just watching the weather and likely heading onto the banks at Memory Rock, then on to Great Sale Spanish Cay. Nice to have a companion, and I see lots of boats here that look like they're heading somewhere, but I'm not dinghying to each one to see.

currently tied up at the Maritime Center in Charleston, SC. continuing south in the morning, Figure I've got another week to go before arriving in FLA. When will it finally get warmer?
