Spoiler alert…..the water temperature is usually in the 50’s unless the area is well protected or some storm pushes the Gulf water in. If you extend your stay beyond Labor Day, weather will be a pain getting back south. Otherwise the books mentioned are the ones found aboard our boat.

Agreed, i recommend figuring out how far up the coast of maine you want to go, then going there first directly in early season and work your way down.
Otherwise what happens is you get caught up in the ri/ma attractions and before you know it you are heading to maine in mid to late august.
Really both regions deserve a season to themselves, trying to squeeze both in one will be rushed, unless you have limited planned stops, and keep a tight schedule, but then you will miss out on lots of places.
Another thing to consider is the later the season the more likely it is to have to contend with a rare hurricane in the area.
