Re: Do you think she stands a chance?

Must be some sort of charter base location.

Have just watched a video from a chopper fly over Barbuda. It looks very, very bad there. Still no comms with the island. Some say the bungalows at the point has been swept away into the ocean.

What an unbelievable mess. That is the best argument I have ever seen for heading down to Chaguaramas in Trinidad for hurricane season.

Makes one wonder , just what sort of personal circumstances would make one stay in an area of repeated ( annual ) potential disasters when it is possible to leave ?

i know of one family who live aboard and work in st martin who have lost everything in this hurricane.

over the years i can think of many who lost their boats, these are the people who run the dive operations, yacht charter companies, marine technical experts, refrigeration engineers etc

transient yachties needing to earn some money

It's Paraquita Bay, just to the West of Hodges Creek where some of the smaller charter companies operate out of, and just to the East of Roadtown harbour where the main Moorings base is located. It's a shallow lagoon surrounded by mangroves which the charter companies use as a hurricane hole. Unfortunately it didn't work this time.

Cheers
Cliff

I am sure most of them would have left before the hurricane if they had known it would be this severe - and if they had the means to do it. We should not assume they are all millionaires who can just "evacuate" to their lodge in the Rockies. People actually live there with everything they own(ed).

Sure - many boat owners seem to have left their boats unprepared. But honestly - with this type of weather i dont think it matters much what preparations you have made?

It's no longer pc to think such logical thoughts, but it does cross my mind about the same time each year.

There appears to be another at 09:00 in from the edge.

It speaks well of modern engineering that most of these hulls appear to be intact.

I have trouble getting my head around how much suffering is to come.

No pictures yet but have heard that the condos and hotel survived and that the boats in the yard are all on top of each other. Still trying to get photos.

Here is what the Moorings Base at Wickhams Cay looked like.

Perhaps the definition of a hurricane hole no longer applies when a hole is filled up densely with moored craft.

The number of catamarans turned upside down in the picture and in the video is frightening and we see only part of the picture. It seems companies owning them will have to adjust their mooring/docking storm tactics in the future.

I have so many questions now. Like if any/how many boats decided to run away from the system. Etc. I have seen a video where apparently young and able people opted for staying in the lagoon rather than taking their craft away from the approaching disaster. So many questions.

Regards and hugs to all affected sailors,
b.
